Spring's here- not the best weather but it's here! What's the best tips on keeping a healthy garden [don't tell me about fertilizers!] and making it prospere to it's best? I usually have little tomato plants, zuchini, cucumbers, etc etc and I tried corn but it didn't work so well. I have a nice amount of space so if you know of anything that's easy and grows well please list. Thanks!
Hillbilly tomatoes... they are beautiful, big, easy and taste very sweet. They are red, orange, yellow and green. Sort of tye dye if you think but they look like that when they are ripe... and they are very good.
Allure are a greenish yellow with a silver looking vine.
Anna russian tomatoes- Pink and are up to 1 lbs
Aurora- yellow/red tasty
Cherokee Purple- Pink and black/purple Very lovely

zapreth answered Monday April 4 2005, 10:02 am: I love growing all kinds of peppers. They come in all colors and some even change color as they mature. Yellow crookneck squash usually does well. Chinese Eggplant is also wonderful (this plant is long and thin like the zuccini and does not have the bitterness of your regular black beauty eggplant). Oh, and try some herbs like Thyme, mint, and oregano. Also merigolds are a natural insect and mole deterent. Enjoy! [ zapreth's advice column | Ask zapreth A Question ]

Your asking the one question every gardner wants to know, how can i get bigger, better plants? Or how can i get my plants to grow at all?
I think i can help. This year and i am going to have a "raised garden". This kind of garden sits on top of the ground. But anyways i have only done a few small gardens in the past, so i wanted to start with veggies that are easy to grow! And i sure as heck don't wanna have to go out and spend tons of money doing it! Here is a step by step guide on how to get those pretty vegies you see in the store. I think this should help you, it sure helped me!
1. Go to the Lowe's, Home Depot, or Walmart gardening department. Inside the gardening department ask one of the employess to show you where the "Seed starting Kits" are. $5.00-$10.00.
2. Pick up an all-purpose LIQUID plant food. Try the "Miracle Grow" brand,$3-$6.00. This is idiot proof! Its helps all of us with black thumbs! ha ha ha. Water the plants in the seed starter kit any time they look dry. Use the plant food every OTHER time you water.
3. Get one bag of really light potting soil$5-$8.00. You'll know its light by picking up the bag! Try and pick the lightest one thats really important. The lighter the soil the easier it is for the roots of your little plants to push through!
4. Ok now get your seeds! What i found really easy to grow : Cucumbers - bell peppers - carrots - radishes - strawberries! - hot pepr's - squash - and of course tomatoes! And for a garden border plant marigolds, they look good and keep bugs away!
4. I know you said you grew ugly small tomatoes, but there is a certain kind that is almost totally idiot proof. They are called "Big Beef Steak" tomatoes. And "Big Red Cherry" Tomatoes. I promise you these will give you big juicy tomatoes to show off!
5. Ok start these plants inside your house in the "seed starter kit". Follow the directions on the box, add 3-5 seeds in each little pocket of dirt. Try and keep them really warm. In the day put them in a window so they can get sun.
6. Within a week you should see little plants starting to pop up! When your tomatoes are about 2 to 3 inches tall take them out of that little green house and plant them outside.Put them in the sunniest place you can find! Make sure that the ground is all tilled up, you don't need a lot of space. The dirt needs to be really dark! Mix the potting soil with the other dirt. Push your finger in the dirt about an inch down, put in a tomatoe plant, make sure they are a few inches apart and your done.
7. Now when all the other plants are about 2 to 3 inches tall do the same thing with them. Except, plant the merigolds in a ring around the little garden you have made, this will keep bugs away and make your garden look really pretty.
Now you are done! If you want some other easy to grow plants, try herbs, in a pot, in the house! Oh but keep them near a sunny window! I really hope this helps, and i hope i haven't forgotten anything. Sorry it was so long. Good luck! [ sparta's advice column | Ask sparta A Question ]
