hey sorry if this is dumb or long but i went out with this guy for seven months (don't get the wrong idea we didn't talk or anything and never saw each other so we never broke up) but finally he got his friend to ask if we could just be friends. but the problem is that was about a year ago (last january or december) and i haven't talked to him since this summer. when we were going out he'd always say goodbye with one of those :-* smiley faces and then last time i talked to him he did that when he had to leave but said lol after it. i don't know if that means maybe he still wants to be friends or something but i still would like to talk to him evey so often atleast but how should i go about doing that? alot of my friends hate him and he knows it and would it be awkward if i just started talking to him? because i don't want him do be wierded out or anyhting.

Boy's usually won't talk to you if they don't like you. He may have lol'd the smiley because he was remembering it from before. Just keep in touch with him and see what happens.
