Try straight out talking with your boyfriend. It sounds to me from your question that you don't know for sure the reason for the break up. Find out! That's the first step to solving this. Then, you gotta explain to him how you feel about him. I know that this may be the hardest thing to do, trust me, i've been there, but it's also probably the best. Just don't keep your feelings a secret. They sound pretty strong to me. Remember, when you want to tell him, someday he might not be there and you may never get the chance. Talk to him while you can.
