You have to talk to him and convince him that you do really like him and that it doesn't matter how popular you are. Don't leave him alone until you convince him of that. If you want to prove how much you like him, ask him out. Good luck

I think that he's probably bisexual and is a bit confused about what he really wants in a relationship right now. It's not because you're too popular. He probably just needed to find a not-so-harsh way of ending your relationship. But just in case- try taking him to the side and asking him about it.
