here goes if you are a guarantor for a relative who is buying a car & their credit rating is low and they default on payment does it effect your credit rating?

Yes. Being a guarantor for a relative means that you agree to pay if they don't. If they default on payment, you either pay it off for them, or your credit is affected just like theirs is.
