Deleting cookies?

Question Posted Monday December 13 2004, 3:24 pm

Okay I have a question about deleting cookies on your computer. I was wondering what exactly does it do when you delete cookies. I delete my history all the time, but what does it mean to delete your cookies? I saw a question where the answer was to delelte cookies, so it just made me curious. I know how to delete cookies, I never have because I never knew what it did. So what exactly is 'deleting cookies'?

Yeah, everybody much covered about what cookies are.

You should delete your cookies everyday or every other day. It also makes your computer faster. Also delete the files, and not just the cookies and history. Trust me, it goes A LOT faster!

Cookies are these things on your computer that track what you do on the internet and computer. The advertizments or pop ups are cookies. So by deleting cookies, you'll have less pop ups.

i think what it means is that every site has cookies and cookies are like markers to let your computer know what site you have been on, and keeps a temporary memory of it. If you want your computer to completely forget about all the sites you have been on and delete the markers, thats wat deleting cokies does. I'm not positive about that..another thing i think cookies do is that on certain site they remember who you are, like if you sign in someone like a site like this.

From www.netplusmarketing.com:

"A cookie is a text file placed on your hard drive by some Web pages that you visit. The cookie allows the Webmaster to track your visits to their Website as well as correlate that information with other information such as the previous page you visited, your operating system, your browser plus any information that you volunteer via a form. When you return to that Website the site will retrieve your cookie file from your hard drive and use whatever information is stored to target content and advertising to both your stated preferences (where asked) and the behavior that you exhibited. It is this technology that allows you to store items in an electronic shopping basket and "remember" other useful pieces of information such as passwords."

When you delete those cookies/bits of information it frees up disk space and lessens the chance of hackers stealing vital information. Just like your history it should be deleted at least once a week.
