Umm...hi. I've read your column and I think that you could really help me with this: I'm shy. There's many reasons why too. First of all, I'm an only child so I never had any practice with talking to people. Second, my parents divorced when I was in elementary school which made me retreat into my shell even deeper. And third, I'm a gymnast so I'm at gym 6 nights a week which doesn't leave much room for a social life. Well, there's this guy I like (I know for a fact he doesn't like me back) and we're friends. I haven't known him for long so I'm still shy around him. He has said that it is his mission to get me to open up, and I want to, but I can't. I just can't! Please help! :)

Well, I'm an only child too, so I know what you mean, in a way. Hmm, I can see where a social life would be a problem, at the gym 6 nights a week. Just talk to him. I know it's easier said than done, trust me. I used to have trouble talking to guys I liked too, even if they did talk to me. I'd be worried about saying the wrong thing all the time. I was finally able to talk to one last year because I was trying to kill my developing crush on him. Just take a deep breath and open your mouth! Trust me, you can't do anything worse than stuff I've done and said to guys I've liked. Lol. I did all the wrongs things - that's why I give good advice on this kind of stuff. I know exactly what NOT to do, lol.
Don't worry about seeming stupid. He's your friend, he won't care. He's trying to get you to talk, so just comply. He'll be happy to hear your voice. Trust me. If you don't have trouble talking to girls, try thinking of him as one of your girl friends when you talk to him. Just don't start talking to your crush about how hot he is...Lol.
