Getting your first instrument, definately ask around at your local music shop, or talk to the Band Directer at your school. Which brand you want depends on what your plans for the future are, musically. If you're ever planning on being in Marching Band, Vito's have a reputation for surviving horrible punishment, whereas if you plan to stay in a concert-style band, you'll probably do best on a Buffet. Yamaha and Selmer produce several different models of both learning and professional quality, so you may want to look into them, as well.

Hmmm. Good question. Definitely DON'T get a Jean-Baptiste anything, or one of those First Act things. They are the SUCK. I use a Selmer, but that's just me. I'm not the best there is, but neither is my instrument. ^_^ Sam Ash has a lot of great stuff you can look at, if there's one near you.
