Well for your user icon or pic of urself you take the pic, and save it (or upload it from a disc) to your computer, then you hit the browse button in user picture in profile settings and select the pic. But for say like a backround picture go to www.photobucket.com and register...and then upload pics from your computer and it provides you with a URL which you put in the box in your column settings that say background image (URL):

the same way you would a normal picutre of yourself..go to profile settings and click [where it says ] to upload..select the icon or pic you want and press save settings..
