Yes, I went through the braces years. Fun, eh?
Well, my advice would be to adjust your embochure to find the most comfortable way for you to play. It helps if you re-adjust every time you get your braces tightened, so be prepared to take your instrument home. It's not always a bad thing- sometimes, adjusting your embochure enhances your tone quality- and you'll get so used to playing in different ways that you'll be able to produce a wider range of tones. As in, it will increase your ability to play high and low notes, as well as the tone differences (bright/dark) Email me if you have any more questions- check my Column (blue_exodus)
By the way- stay with band! I don't know what grade you're in, but it will become the greatest experience of your life- especially marching band. It may sound dorky, but it's not. I've never met a "band dork" that would stab you in the back, or make fun of you because you're different! Band is like a family, and we all love each other!

MFS answered Tuesday June 29 2004, 11:22 pm: Some friends of mine used to put wax over their braces to keep the metal from digging into their lips. The other option is to just keep at it, but give yourself lots of rest and build up your lips' resistance (which is essentially building light callouses on your internal lip lining).
Whatever you do, DO NOT USE THINGS LIKE ANBESOL! My friend Sandy, whom I told not to do this, used Anbesol to numb her lips after playing a lot... then, during rehearsal, because she was unable to feel the pain... well, she mangaged to bite through her lower lip, which made her unable to play for over a week so her lip could heal. dweedle_girl05 answered Tuesday June 29 2004, 10:53 pm: Yeah, braces are a big big big big (need I stress the point?) BIIIG pain in the neck. I have them, and I can still play the clarinet okay, but a friend of mine who has them can't play the saxophone. I say clarinet, just because it works for me. GC_rox_my_sox answered Tuesday June 29 2004, 9:37 pm: Did you just get braces? I play saxaphone, and when I first got braces, it did hurt. I had my mom write a note to my band teacher, and that got me out of playing for a while. After about a week, the pain completely goes away, and you can play normally.
