OneMan answered Sunday May 16 2004, 5:12 pm: feels like an intense itching, burning sensation, localized in your vagina and vulva. this itching is not always present, but can get really bad, so bad you can hardly walk, let alone ride your bike to the pharmacy or doctor to get it treated.
looks like clumpy nasty white stuff. most medical descriptions compare the discharge to ricotta cheese, but it can range from thick and not clumpy to faintly yellow to thin and clear.
smells like bread or beer. in fact, it smells pretty much exactly like yeast, although the yeast used in brewing and baking is an entirely different species (Saccharomyces cerevisiae).
And I would strongly reccomend a visit to the dirctor in lieu of letting it "go away on it's own". [ OneMan's advice column | Ask OneMan A Question ]
notnormal answered Friday May 14 2004, 12:38 am: a)It is an over-growth of yeast, which is everywhere naturally, and grows on your body normally, but your immune system keeps it in check.
b) A vaginal yeast infection itches and burns. You would know if you had one. There is a white discharge that has an odor that is actually a little like yeast in bread.
You can also get yeast infections on your skin in moist places like under your breasts. Babies sometimes get a yeast infection in their mouth, called thrush.
c) It occurs when conditons are right. Sometimes your immune system is stressed and yeast over-grows. Sometimes it occurs when you take antibiotics to kill a bacterial infection because the normal balance is altered and the yeast gains an advantage. Sometimes clothing can bring it on, for example wearing a bathing suit under your cloths. Nylon doesn't allow air circulation like cotton does. Yeast is killed by light and air, and grows more in moist warm places. [ notnormal's advice column | Ask notnormal A Question ]
