Would you want to date someone that turned down a romatic evening to watch a baseball game? Is that grounds for dumping him. P.s it would have been the first time with him.

It WAS going to be your first date so you have to remember that maybe he was self-consious or scared.
Maybe the "'idea" of romance scared him because maybe he had some trouble in the past.
Did you ask him why he cancelled? Maybe there is a logical explaination for all of this...and just because he turned the date down doesn't mean he doesn't like you.
Were you guys ever friends at one point BEFORE you two thought about dating??
That could also complicate things. Maybe he's afraid it will hurt the friendship in he long-run.
But then again, if you guys never really talked much before you decided on dating, that could also be the problem too. Myabe he wants to get to know you first so if you guys decide to become a couple you could be successful with that.
There are many different options. You should talk to him about it and if you can't confront him then write him a letter, an email, or instant message him if he has a screen name. It may be easier that way.
