Overwelmed

Question Posted Thursday October 16 2003, 4:00 pm

I am being overwelmed by everything. Ive been taking driver's ed after school so i dont get home untill around 7:00 pm and sometimes not untill 8:00 pm. I am also involved in a swim team and have to go to school early. With all this i am very tired after school and cant balance anything out. I cant keep up with homework and am not do well on test, oh ill face it im pretty much failing every class. Any advice on how to balance everything out and get maybe a fresh start?

Start by sleeping well on the weekends. Here's my tricks:

I leave for school every day at 7 (get up at 5:30 to get ready). I'm at school on average till 4 o clock, and then with various extracurriculars and evening bands, piano lessons, etc etc, I lose more time. I manage to spend minimal time on the computer, have at least half an hour rest time, and I have hours of homework at night. I'm always in bed by midnight. However, if it's the weekend, you know I'm going to be sleeping in majorly. Get winks whenever you can-- and not in class.

If you have trouble with homework, balance it out and you'll get more accomplished. For example, say you have to read 20 pages for history, do 50 problems for math, write a science lab, and read a story for english. Do things in pieces. Read 5 or 10 pages of history, and then do 10 math problems. When you do things in broken up segments, you tend to stay focused, and thus you get more done in a shorter amount of time.

If you feel your concentration waning altogether, take a 15 minute break from the homework and set your alarm for a short nap, watch TV, chat with a friend on the computer, or listen to music. That's my way of balancing homework.

As far as the rest of your schedule goes, try getting as much homework accomplished during the school day as possible in order to reduce homework time at home. I don't know how your drivers' ed program works, but take a book in the car when you're not the one driving if you're allowed. If all else fails, use homeroom as a catch up time for one or two math problems you couldn't finish or the story you had to read for English.

In order to accomplish a fresh start, you need to be motivated. Get yourself in the proper mindset to do well in school and get more sleep. Hopefully things will start getting better and you'll have more energy soon. :) Best of luck to you!!
