my laptop is an acer, windows vista basic.
intel celeron m.
when i try to connect to the internet which is linksys, it says connected with limited access.
but i have NO access whatsoever. but then it shows that i can get on, but then it goes back to not letting me.
at the bottom is shows the two computers with a yeild sign or something, but when im connected it shows like and earth symbol on the computers.

When it says connected with limited access, try to ping the router. To do this go to start > run > type 'cmd' without the quotes. When the black window opens type 'ping 192.168.1.1' without the quotes. If you get a reply, then type 'ipconfig' without quotes. If your address is 192.168.something.something then you've got an address and you network is fux0rd beyond the router. If you don't have an address like the example, try typing ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew
If it wont let you do this because of administrative access rights, go into your control panel, go to user accounts, uncheck the box that says something like 'user account protection' and try again.
A limited connection means you computer can communicate with the router (usually) but isn't getting a response from dns servers or any other host beyond the gateway (router).

I'm thinking about living in an apartment complex next year that doesn't have Internet access. They have cable TV and said that I could get Road Runner.
I don't want to pay for someone to come install it for me. I've heard that it's pretty simple to do it yourself and this diagram makes perfect sense to me. http://content.rr.com/rdrun/qa.htm#14
I just don't understand what the first step would involve with the coaxial cable being split outside.
Would it be easy for me to hook it up myself? How do I do it? An answer from someone that has done it before would be wonderful.
If I do choose to have a technician install it, how much would it cost? The website doesn't say.
Thanks!

Use a splitter, although it's easier if you let them come out and dedicate a wall jack to internet, run that to the modem. Once you've done that, you'll want to use what's called a router, wireless, wired, that's your choice. Fact: A switch is not a router, the only similarity is that they both have one port dedicated to the outgoing internet connection. A switch is usually used to create network segments.
A basic router will cost 40-60 dollars. If you have a choice on manufacturer, go with Linksys, it's a division of Cisco and Cisco has credibility...a lot of it.
If you want to use a wireless network to keep from having ethernet cables renning all over the floor, you'll need some sort of wireless network interface device for you desktops as most of them will not come with one. You can grab a USB wireless adapter which simply plugs into a USB port on your computer, or go with the more permanent solution and buy an internal wireless NIC that will fit into one of your expansion slots. Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. will carry what your looking for.
Once you set up the wireless network you'll want to secure it. To keep from having your neighbors using up all of your tasty bandwidth you should disable SSID broadcasting, enable MAC filtering to allow only and put in the MAC addresses of your NIC's. If you're going to be paying any bills online or doing anything private, you should using some sort of encryption, i'm going to recommend WPA-PSK over WEP simply because it's better. Most network devices supports this, warning: anything with 'speedbooster' doesn't support WPA-PSK and you'll have to go with the weaker WEP.
Good luck setting it up and i'll be glad to answer any more questions.

Hey. I was wondering how to change my username on myspace because they gave me this number which I don't really like at all. haha, thanks (link)
|
You could create a new one and the maybe you wont suck so much at life.
|
so, i've downloaded photofiltre and adobe imageready cs2 because i wanna make a defualt profile picture for myspace like the ones layout makers have. you know, with designs and stuff. but the thing is, i don't know HOW to make them. like, for the layouts makers, they have cool designs [[stars, lines, etc.]]. i'm new with HTMLs and stuff like that. i would really like it if somebody would tell me ways to make a cool design with a picture of me in it. so if anybody can help me with this, i would really appreciate it! (link)
|
Could you give me an example of one of these 'layout designers' pictures? I'd love to help out, but your question is pretty vague.
|
Okay so I use Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8. What do I use to make a picture look like a cartoon ? Because I want a picture of me be made into a cartoon. Thanks in advance (link)

Not too sure about your application seeing as it's definitely not the mainstream photoshop type. I'd recommend using a free alternative such as The GIMP, it's popular, with a lot of tutorials.
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/
|
I've designed a couple of things online, but I want to be able to use Photoshop to make things look better and more unique.
Is there any way that I wouldn't have to pay for it?
And if so, are there any great tutorials that would help me understand photoshop better?
Thanks (link)
|
Like the other person said, you can download it from bittorrent or some other p2p network. If you want a free alternative, try 'the gimp'. Do a google search of you need to find it.
|
Does anyone know any dsl, high speed internets for affordable prices. I need something that I could talk on the phone and be able to be online. I was thinking about getting sbc/at&t but I want to pay something under 30$. I use to have Netzero but it was way too slow.
If you have a website with more information that would be a great help. Thank You. (link)
|
You could get a wireless card and an antenna and steal your neighbors wireless. If you don't want to do that, do a local search for DSL promos, cable will always cost more then that, unless there's a 'month-wise trial period', you'll end up at about 40$ eventually.

how do you views someones photobucket? like there pictures and stuff (link)
|
Not sure what you mean, but if somebody links you to an image of theres that's hosted by photobucket, you can edit the URL to drop you into the account.
EX: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y64/familyguy3/Irssishot.png
Simply edit out the image name which will go back to the last forward slash, and you'll get back to the file view.

does anybody know any sites i can legally download songs from, free?
greatly appreciated.
thank you. (link)
|
Like dude said, if you're getting a song for free without the use of a promotional code of some sort, they you're stealing it. If you could simply get any song for free legally, how would the artists make money from albums? Now, you can use bitorrent or p2p software such as limewire, bearshare, kazaa, morpheus, etc. To get them, but they'll be far from legal.

I have advanced HTML knowledge. Does anybody know of somewhere I can design and upload a website for free? I don't want ads on my page, so that rules out Angelfire and Geocities. Thanks! (link)
|
To get a page without ads, go with http://www.awardspace.com

This is not a hard computer questions, so please at least read this before you give up on me.
OK, so I need to make a link that has different text than where it leads to. Like, if the link went to www.google.com, it would say Google, and you could click on the word Google and it would lead you to www.google.com.
I figured out how to do this on HTML for MySpace or something, but I need it in BBCode, like for forums, like Proboards. I've seen it done before.
Any help would be appreciated. =] (link)
|
There's usually two ways, some boards use one, some the other, some neither. Try one of these...
[url="www.google.com"]Google[/url]
[url=www.google.com]Google[/url]

does your i.p. address change sometimes? i use dsl but like sometimes when i check it online or w/e it changes... (link)
|
Once you stop the traffic from your modem, the IP address may be assigned to somebody else, when you plug it back in and have traffic again, you'll acquire another address. With DSL and cable, you've got a 'static address' which for the most part, (as long as there's traffic) doesn't change, if you've got dialup, you have what's called a 'dynamic address' which changes everytime you dial.
|
I wonder how the school connects to the internet without a service provider. because there people could just click internet explorer and the would be on the internet? is it free ? (link)
|
They have a T1 connection. Unlike Dial-up which uses a telephone line they are always connected to the internet. For a home, you wont need a T1 line, contact your local cable company, but it's usually 50$ a month or less. It's more then worth the price, dialup is 'teh suck'.
|
is there anyway to connect to the internet other than the ones that gives limited access without having to get an internet service provider? is there some type of modem or cable? (link)
|
Wow, person who last answered, you are SO FREAKING WRONG!
Now, to the poster, what do you mean limited access? In order to use the internet you must have an ISP. A modem is a device used to convert serial digital data from a transmitting terminal to a signal suitable for transmission over a telephone channel, or to re-convert the transmitted signal to serial digital data for acceptance by a receiving terminal.
A cable, well, think about that for one second.
As for the last answerer, a router is a special-purpose dedicated computer that attaches to two or more networks and routes packets from one network to the other. In particular, an Internet gateway routes IP datagrams among the networks it connects. Gateways route packets to other gateways until they can be delivered to the final destination directly across one physical network. It does not give you internet access alone. Again, you NEED AN ISP.

(PROS WITH AOL.)
my mom and dad don't want me or my sister on myspace, and i've been sneaking on at my friends houses. aren't they're any sites that like...don't track it in your history? AND, i have parental blocks on my computer, and i wanted to know how to get around it...i also have AOL GUARDIAN on my account, so my mom knows what i'm doing all the time. if i use a different browswer, will it still record it?
anything would help... thanks. x333 (link)
|
Well, if you use a browser such as firefox, you can have it automatically clear the history, saved forms, etc. when you close it. The problem is you'll need to be able to download and install it. My advice is not to use myspace. It may have been originally used to find other bands and such but now it's used for much worse.
"From the terms of service for Myspace
"By displaying or publishing ("posting") any Content, messages, text, files, images, photos, video, sounds, profiles, works of authorship, or any other materials (collectively, "Content") on or through the Services, you hereby grant to MySpace.com, a non-exclusive, fully-paid and royalty-free, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense through unlimited levels of sublicensees) to use, copy, modify, adapt, translate, publicly perform, publicly display, store, reproduce, transmit, and distribute such Content on and through the Services.""
If that doesn't make sense to you... Which it should. It's basically saying that Myspace.com has the right, royalty free, to take any content posted and redistribute however they want. This includes your personal information. You're basically putting everything about you on a website that has been openly admitted to being monitored by the FBI and other government organizations to profile US citizens. Try another networking site, or better yet, don't do it at all. Your parents, for once, are right.

i have a digital camera with that soft plastic screen like most of them have..and the actually screen didnt crack but theres like a cracklike effect in the screan and the colors are distorted and most of it is black..it turns on you just cant view ur pics..my question is..can this be fixed? or do i need to buy a totally new one? thanks! (link)
|
You may be able to fix it, but usually a broken LCD is just bad news. You could either just keep it and move the pictures to you computer and view them, or buy a new one.

whenever i want to play a game on my computer that requires macromedia shockwave player, it doesnt go on at first, but then a screen comes up saying it is downloading it. after a few seconds though, a thing comes up that says "network error. please check your internet connection and try again" and then i can never play the game. my internet is working though, so i dont know why it says i have no internet connection. it has also said i have no internet connection with some other stuff that i have tried to download off of the internet. i don't know why it's saying this, because i am on internet explorer. is there any way to fix this? thanks. (link)

Are you using a Dial up connection such as AOL or a DSL or Cable connection?
|
ok um i have mozilla firefox, and like every now and then, it'll get stuck so I close it and when i click on the icon again to open it, it asks me which account I'd like to use. The one i was just on it wont let me go on. Why does this happen? Its really annoying because all the sites I went on with the other username arent on the one Im on now. Is there any way I can switch back to my other username? Please help me. ♥
(link)
|
This happens when you open two instances of firefox. It's trying to go under the default username, but since it's already in use, it uses a different one. The bookmarks are saved for each individual username. You need to switch back to the default username. Do the following...
Open the "Start" menu, select "Run" and type:
firefox.exe -profilemanager
Then select the profile you want, if the boomarks aren't in the one you select do it again and select a different one.
