Everyone's body develops on its own schedule, and it's not unusual at all not to have gotten your period at 14. You're right in that you don't need to be checked out until you're 16 if you have amenorrhea (that's the medical term for not getting your period). If you're really worried, you might feel better if you talk to the doctor...it would be horrible to worry about this for months and months.
If you can, try to put it out of your mind for now, because this happens to more girls than you would think. They just don't talk about it. gigi

Q: I have a dance competion around the time I will be getting my period and I need to know how to put tampons in.
I have the cardboard kind. So please don't say to get the plastic ones because I already have two boxes of the cardboard ones.
I tried but it kind of hurt. I know I was putting it in the right place though.
PLEASE HELP!

There are many different positions you can assume to insert a tampon, but this is the way I've always done it (both with cardboard and other types of applicators):
Relax. Sit on the toilet or the edge of a chair, and spread your thighs wide. Bring the applicator up to the vaginal opening, but don't force the applicator inside--just push the tampon in from that point. I found that the tampon was always in just the right place when doing it this way. gigi

Q: Doesn't everyone tell you it's incredible stupid, dumb, and unhealthy to do drugs like weed and cocaine, etc? Then why on an ADVICE site does it have questions asking about drugs. No, not like educational things about them, like "Oh when i smoked weed I threw up, is this normal?". I was expecting every answer to be like "You shouldn't have smoked weed in this first place, these are drugs and they are unhealthy." But no the answers were more like encouraging the people to try it again and see what happens? What the heck? Is it ok to do drugs now?
|

|

It's not "okay" to do drugs now, or at any time. But if you look at the way things are honestly, many many teens experiment with drugs, and many adults use drugs. I think that the advice is being given not to encourage people to use drugs (or it shouldn't be), but rather to answer someone's question honestly--no matter what is being asked--and not being judgemental. At least, that is what I would do if someone asked me about drugs on this site.
Drugs are harmful for various reasons, and this differs from substance to substance, but the one thing that covers all of them is that they are ILLEGAL...and that makes them "not okay", period. gigi

You may have torn some ligaments, and if so, you shouldn't be walking around without some support. I'd advise you to either go to the emergency room (they see a lot of this there) or call an orthopedist tomorrow and try to get in to see him. Only a doctor will know if it is safe for you to put weight on it. The sooner you see the doctor and do the right thing to let it heal, the sooner you'll be out on the court again! gigi

Q: Does the filling they put in your cavity hurt?
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
No, the filling itself doesn't hurt. However, the dentist has to widen the cavity a bit to smooth out the edges, etc. with a drill. Before he does this, he will give you a shot of Novocaine so you won't feel anything when he drills. Usually the dentist will numb your gum with some sort of gel applied with a Q-tip, so you won't even feel the shot!
The worst part is the sound of the drill. If your dentist offers you headphones so that you can listen to music, by all means take them! Good luck! gigi

Q: i always seem to have clamy, sweaty hands.
and i dont know why.
even if the rest of my body is cold, my hands are sweating.
does anyone know why?
or maybe a way to get rid of it?

Mine used to be clammy and sweaty because I was so nervous around other people. Are you shy? (I know that you can be really shy but still "act" like you're not.) And yes, there is a prescription medicine for this...I got some from a dermatologist I used to see...it's called Drysol. Good luck! gigi

It sounds like you have bronchitis, along with an enlarged lymph node, which is common when you have an infection. The treatment is antibiotics which you must get from the doctor. Don't "borrow" someone else's or use an old prescription because you don't know which of many "bugs" is causing the infection and if you take the wrong kind, not only will you not get better, but you could contribute to the problems we have now with "superbugs" that don't respond to regular medication.
So please make an appt. now! gigi

Q: I know i'm getting an ear infection, i've had numerous growing up so i know what they feel like without having to be told by a professional. My mom is supposed to be making me a doctors appointment to get something done about it, but hasn't had the time to make the appointment. I really need to do something about the pain. Does anyone know of an over the counter medicine or at home remedy for an ear infection? I'm seriously willing to try anything.
Also, how can you tell if your getting strep throat or something of the sort. My glands on the right side of my throat are swollen and it hurts severely to swallow. I was told this could be causing my earache, or vise versa. Does anyone know how to get my throat to stop hurting also?
Thanks!

If you live close to the Mexican border, you can buy antibiotics without a prescription. You would need 10 days' worth of most antibiotics to clear the infection. I don't recommend this.
Nor do I recommend home remedies. My mom used to put warm oil in my ear and it HURT. An ENT doctor later told me that it had caused a small loss in hearing as well.
If 800 mg. of Advil (that's more than what is listed on the box...it's the prescription dose) doesn't help your pain, then the only thing that will is a narcotic which must be prescribed by a physician.
Nag your Mom until she makes the appt...it's important to you!!! gigi

Q: okay.female here.
well i`m 17 almost 18.
i`m short like 5 foot or 5'1 who knows really alot of people think 4'11 but i honestly don`t know.
well my current weight that i know of it 118.
pants size is usaully 3-5 i porbably should wear a 4 but those suckers are hard to find.
i`m not completely unhappy with my body just my stomach.
&& i want to lose a few pound to make that stomach look better.
i have love handles thats my main thing i hate.
people say i should not lose weight because of my breast. they are a 38 d.
so i want some ideas on wat you think i should do.
i have an ab louge would that be good.??
& i love food so yes that would be hard to be real strict.
so thanks alot

Exercise is the fastest way to take care of those abs. As for dieting: If you are 5 feet tall you should weigh ABOUT 100 lbs, with 5 lbs. added for each 1 inch. This is for a healthy body, not for an anorectic body such as those seen on actresses, etc.
I'm not certain what the problem is with losing weight and your breasts. My daughter, at your age, was a 36DD. I tried to encourage her to get a breast reduction because breasts as large as hers will eventually give her back problems. Your breasts aren't that large.
If you're worried about getting smaller breasts with diet, don't. You would have to be on a starvation diet to do much about them...at least until you have a baby. (Breasts do weird things during and after childbirth).
Good luck! And if you lose weight, do it very slowly...you just don't have that much to lose.

Q: I'm a virgin, I used to play a lot of sports and ride horses, now I'm not really into that stuff. It kind of has feeling, but not really...it's hard to explain, it's very faint, so it's hard to classify how it feels. I don't use tampons, and it's right above my vagina opening...
|
|
|
|

OK, you rode horses. This tissue could very well be the remnants of your hymen. That's the tissue that sometimes covers the vaginal openings of virgins. Athletic girls, esp. horseback riders, are well known to have torn hymens and it doesn't mean you're not a virgin anymore.
I wouldn't worry about it, or even give it another thought, unless it starts to hurt or seems infected. The next time you see a doctor, have her or him take a look, and that will really put your mind at ease. The remnants of a hymen can be snipped away.
Don't be afraid that you have some strange growth. I'm sure you'll be fine. Gigi

Q: I wasn't really sure what category to put this under, and it's kind of embarassing, but I really need to know...so...I have this weird, fleshy string-like thing coming out of my vagina, and it's always been there. I have no idea what it is and I was just wondering if this is normal or what? What is it?!

Before I can answer, would you tell me a few things about you? Are you a virgin? If not, when did you first have sex? Are you athletic?
Does the "body part" have any sensation...pain, whatever? How far does it stick out? Do you use tampons? Lastly, are you sure it is coming from your vagina? Don't be afraid to be absolutely truthful; I'll help you as best I can. Promise! Gigi

Is there any chance at all that you might be pregnant? Trust me, that's the first thing to come to a doctor's mind when diagnosing a girl with symptoms like yours. If not, just relax and if the same thing happens next month, see a doctor. On the other hand, if you could be pregnant, you should see a doctor immediately because you could have an ectopic pregnancy (that's when the fertilized egg attaches to something other than a uterus). Good luck. Gigi

It's not "normal" but it doesn't mean that there's anything seriously wrong with you, either. You probably have some sort of hormone imbalance (thyroid, ovarian) that your doctor can take care of with medication. Have your mom make an appointment, but in the meantime--don't worry! Gigi
