Hey, I'm Melody! I've been giving advice on and off since 2003. I'm a 23 year old military wife, expecting a baby boy in August, and working on my Bachelor's degree. :)
Oh, and ask me anything!
Advice
20/f. So, of course, I feel like I need a little more independence from my family. I don't want them out of my life. I just need some space. So, I thought I would take on a part time job. The thing is, my first year in college, I was working and I felt like it was too many hours. My grades weren't terrible but after I stopped, I started getting like straight A's. I'm planning to go to grad school so I need as many A's as possible. Especially, because grad school looks at your last 60 credits of course work in depth. Should I take on a job right now, or just wait? It's just hard being my age and needing money from your parents all the time. I know that I'm furthering my education so it's not like I'm sitting around doing nothing. If you suggest I don't take the job, what else can i do to make some money on the side? I thought maybe tutoring or something but I would need to get clients from somewhere. Keep in mind that I could always schedule my job around my schedule. it's not like their going to MAKE me work when I can't. I just don't know what the more responsible choice would be. Please feel free to give your input. Should I take the job? And if not... what can I do to make some money so I could at least pay for my car and my gas and stuff like that. Thank you!
xoxo
Are you taking summer courses? That could be a huge contributing factor in deciding which decision to make. Anyway, I think you should take the job.
Work experience is the best experience, even if you don't realize it at the time. I've been my absolute happiest while working, even when I felt miserable at the time. It's the summer so now is the perfect time to start working and save up money. It will get you away from you family for a major chunk of the day, which in turn will make you appreciate them even more. Besides, you never know when you'll need that cash for college one day.
If you want to tutor that could be an excellent idea as well. Though I doubt you would get much of a demand this time of the year. Around the end of the summer, beginning of fall though, I would put up fliers around your town with your phone number, school experience, and recommendations.
If you get a job and like it, work as many hours as you can this summer, and when fall starts let your manager know you will have to cut back to 20 or less hours a week. Whatever you feel comfortable with. If work starts conflicting with school, talk to your parents. If it's okay with them, go ahead and quit.

I was in a play my freshman year of college. After the play, I hung out with and started having a fling with a guy from the cast...and it was horrible because all he could talk about, even while we were in bed together was how great this woman he'd had an affair with had been and how much he was in love with her still. He and I stopped our fling but being in that play really opened my social doors, I started hanging out the theater people, and I changed my major to theater; so far it's been great and they're like my family now; plus my new boyfriend is a theater major also.
But there's a huge problem because I found out who the woman was that the guy I had the fling with was always raving about...it's a professor from the theater dept, for a class that's required of all theater majors and she's the only professor that teaches it! And even worse...I found out that she knows...because he told her all about me, in lurid detail, and he even told her in very detailed terms how much better of a lover she was for him than I was.
What should I do?
If you love theatre and she is your absolute only option, there isn't much you can do but suck it up and deal with it.
Are you worried because it will simply be awkward? If so, see if she offers an online class. If she doesn't, just pretend you don't know. Pretend you never met the guy, and try your hardest in the class. It's just one semester.
Is this women his teacher? If so she could get in serious trouble because of this, so she will probably be careful not to step out of line. If she is mean to you, grades you harshly, or talks about you to the class or behind your back you can talk to the dean or department head about it. She can't get away with that, and she won't.
Good luck & I sympathize with you!

How many years do you have to go to college to become a physical therapist?
A pysical therapist is a doctor. Not only are they a doctor, but they are a doctor that is specialized in a certain field, meaning the years of schooling go up even more.
It's hard to say how long anyone will have to go to college for a particular career field because so many things come into account. For instance, how many dual enrollment classes you took in highschool, whether or not you have to take remedial courses before taking the college classes, whether you fail any classes, or whether you take any summer courses.
Generally though, you will have to go to undergraduate school (4+ years), med school & residency (at least 2+ years), and more than likely a year or two studying your specialty. You will also have to pass a big exam sometime during all of this. You are probably looking at around 8-10 years of college before you will be working. The money is great though, so if you are dedicated, smart, and have a way to pay for all this schooling, then by all means go for it :)
If this sounds like to much for you, you can always be a physical therapist assistant. They make a decent living, and you only have to go to school for about three years.
Good luck!

Hi,
I'm 18/f and a college student. I'm studyin gpre-med so I'm taking a lot of science classes. So in high school I never had to work extremely hard (I studied a lot, but didn't have to stay up all night if that makes sense) and I always got A's, but since I go to this really good university and I'm taking advanced classes I'm finding that my study methods are not effective.
So...what can I do to get higher grades on my midterms? What are some study habits that are really effective that I can try?
Thanks a lot
I was the same way when I started college. Seeing the difference in high school workload and then college is kind of intimidating. Here are some ways I managed to keep good grades though:
- Motivation
You have to be motivated to get good grades. Everytime I would get an A on an exam or paper I would be so proud of myself. This motivated me to continue studying hard to keep my good grades up. If I did bad on an assignment, I used that as motivation to do better next time. When you are motivated, it really makes a difference in the quality of your studying. Always think about why you are in college and how getting good grades is going to get you wear you want to go.
- Good work station
Having a quiet place to study is key to taking in information. No one can study with a tv or rock music blaring. It's just not going to happen. Make sure you have a quiet and functional space to study in. If you study in this area every time, your mind associates it with studying and will get you in the right mind set to get your work done.
- Don't procrasinate
This is my biggest problem. In fact, I am procrastinating right now. I have a ton of homework I need to be doing since it's finals week, and here I am on advicenators. Don't do that! :)
Usually in college you will have all of your assignments you will be doing that semester in a syllabus or course calendar. Take advantage of that. Make you an outline of how and when you are going to get all of your assignments done. Study a little bit for your classes every night so you won't be so stressed come test time. If you already learned your material throughout the month, you only have to review it the night before the test.
If it's too late for that and it's already time for you exams, start studying now. Everynight break your studying off into the smallest chunks you can before your test. Review all of the material the night before the test.
Good luck! I know how stressful this time can be!

im a junior in high school, the school years is about to end and i'll be a senior next year. My brother recommended out of the blue that in the summer i should take jr college classes in order to get units. I already signed up for it and i plan on taking 12 weeks with 4 classes total, which is about 11 or 12 units. My brother said that by the time i graduate, i should get 30 units, so i'll be taking a few classes during my senior year and during the summer after i graduate, and including this summer coming up.
i was wondering, will this help me? my brother said it will look really good on a university application and it will take a year of college away, so i'll only have to go for 3 years? Is this true? how will this benefit me? and is it a waste of time? Thank you! Let me know some advice!
It will help you. Depending on how many units you to take, you can graduate with a semester, year, or more of college under your belt. It's also usually much cheaper. It will save you a lot of money in the long run. I would do it if you can handle the workload.
One thing I will mention is that you should check to make sure that the classes you are taking will transfer to the college you plan on attending. Otherwise it would be a waste of time.

So, i really, really want to go george mason university in the fall. My parents are being extremely difficult, though. It's the most expensive school I've been accepted to but it's not through the roof like a private school. I'm convinced that it's the best school for me out of all the school's I've been accepted to. I really need advice on what I can say to them to sell them on it.
Also, is it possible to get financial aid from a college just by calling them and asking them about it?
The answer to your last question is no. Every college you go to will make you fill out a FAFSA form which will decide how much, if any, financial aid you are eligible for. You will fill one of these forms out every year you are in college, and it is based on how much income your parents brought in the previous year. It will be based on their income and any other money source they have, how many dependents are living in the household, among other things.
A lot of teachers, advisors, etc. will tell students to never think they can't go to a school just because of the price. As great as this may sound, it's actually one of the biggest factors you should consider. Do you really want to take out thousands of dollars worth of loans each year you are in school, and then be in debt when you graduate?
I am in no way trying to discourage you, but if you live in a middle class family, you probably won't get enough financial aid to cover a significant amount of the expenses; and unfortuantely, your family income probably isn't large enough to cover your college expenses without putting your family completely in a hole that will be near impossible to dig themselves out of.
I don't think you should completely rule out this particular university, but you should defintely keep your options open because sadly enough, there is a chance it's just not going to happen. If it's just not in your family's power, there isn't anything you can do. I doubt your family is just being difficult for the sake of being difficult. They love you, and want you to be able to go to the school of your dreams, but they can't perform miracles. What do you want them to do? Plant a money tree?
Here is what you need to do. Go talk to your advisor and ask about scholarships. Apply to as many as you can and see what you can come up with. Then talk to your parents and see how much they are willing to splurge on your schooling. After that, fill out a FAFSA form and see how much you are eligible for. Who knows? With the scholarships, financial aid, grants, etc. it may just be in your parents ability to cover the rest.
If not, consider going to a cheaper school for the first 2 years. Start saving up and ask your parents to do the same. You can transfer later to this university if it's still what you want.

Basically, we have to do coursework, i.e. an assignment/essay that contributes 20% to my college qualification. Okay, now its technically exam work. So my laptop fuzzed out on me, so i was using a computer at college, and you had to give it in before 2.30, or it wouldnt be accepted. When i was first writing, i wrote "xxxxxxx believed that the black power movement...."!?!?!? i litterelly put 'xxxxxxx' because i was supposed to insert the name of the guy who believed it?!
So....do you think it would affect my grade? Any idea's? cheerz
I am sure it will affect your grade, but nothing so drastic as to make you flunk it, or not get accepted to college. I wouldn't stress out about it. I am sure points will be taken off, but learn from this and proof read your work more carefully next time. I know from experience that being on a time limit can be stressful, but remember it's always better to do it right the first time.
I wouldn't worry to much about it. It isn't that big of a deal.

Okay, I am in highschool, and I am thinking about my college plans for after I graduate! I am very serious about my future, and I am just frustrated that i don't know 100% What I want to be when I grow up, and other people know from the moment they're old enough to talk!
Here's a little about what i would like:
.make good money say 50,000 and up
.care for people (preferally not elder)
.help people
.somthing in the medical feild
And I know that addresses a very broad search of careers.
So we visited a community college today and they talked about respiratory therapist, and how they make good money and get vacation time, and are in demand. They didn't say what the career envolved particuarly.
So I was just wondering if some one could give me an insight into respiratory therapist, and if you have any career suggestions. ANYTHING helps thanks!
If you go into respiratory therapy, whether you want to be an M.D. or an assistant, you will be dealing with the elderly. It only makes since, because older people are usually the ones that have respiratory problems.
"Respiratory Therapists are members of the health care team that provides respiratory care for patients with heart and lung disorders. Respiratory Therapists perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures with patients of all ages and are qualified to perform intensive care, critical care, neonatal and emergency room procedures. "
I got that off of my college's website.
Don't stress out. I am in college and still don't know what I want to do 100 percent either. With the criteria you gave, I think you should consider the following besides repiratory therapy:
LPN/RN
Radiology Technician
Ultrasound Technician
Physical Therapist Assistant
One of my good friend's sister is a repiratory therapist and the money is great. She started right out of high school and is making a pretty good amount of money. However her hours are awful. She works from 6 in the evening until 6 in the morning or something like that. When she gets hope all she wants to do is sleep. That's something you will want to think about going into the health profession.
Good luck!

Hey, I want to major in Elementary Education in College, but I want to know how many years of schooling there are in that.
I know you need 4 years of college, but also additional college. How many years will i have to be in college after the first 4 years? Thank you!
It's probably different for every state. Different states have different requirements for their teachers.
Where I live you have to get accepted into the TEP (teacher education program) as well as getting your 4 year degree. You also have to take a test after doing all this to assess whether you know enough about reading, writing, and math. Then you have to go through a few more steps to get a teaching license for your state.
You should be able to finish all this in four years though. Normally you can be enrolled in the TEP while you are in the process of getting your degree. For instance, at the college I am tranferring to, I will work on getting my Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences (the education bachelor) and then apply to the TEP. If I get accepted, I will do both at the same time. Then I will take the PRAXIS test (I think that's what it is called) and if I pass I can go get my teaching license after finishing up my 4 year degree. Then if you want, you can go on and get a Master's degree as well.
The best advice I can give you is to talk to your advisor or guidance councelor and then check out the website of the college you plan on attending. Usually they will have some general information on the major you are wanting.
Good luck!

i cant decide where i want to go to college. i applied to 6 places and got into all of them. but now i realize that i absolutely dont want to go to 4 of them. so its between 2 schools.
im not going to use the names of the colleges but...
the first one is a fairly large school near a city, which i really want. but i've been reading reviews about this school and most are negative. they say "if your not white, rich, a smoker, and drinker, then you wont fit in" and not the last 3. so im just worried that the school is too much about partying.
the second place is a branch of a big school, so they have off campus housing. i would live in an apartment with 4 people. the only issue there is that im a girl and we'd have 2 girls and 2 guys in the apartment. the school itself seems nice, but im worried that i wont get the full college experience.
what do you think i should do? ive visited both places but i just cannot seem to get that moment where im like "this is the place i wanna go" please help!
As far as the culture goes, you seem to be in the middle. There are pros and cons to both, which is why you are having a hard time. Since you can't make your decision based completely on the atmosphere and culture, make your decision based on academics.
Which school as the best program for your major? If you haven't picked your major yet, which school has the best academics or reputation for the most helpful teachers and advisors?
These are all things you should think about. Try talking to your high school advisor too. He or she can help you make the decision.

I am studying abroad in China for college... I need any tips or suggestions for going to China.
Can I use my phone?
An adaptor/converter for electronics?
Certain colors to wear or not wear?
Is there a variety of american food to eat there?
Friendly?
Clean?
Those are just some ideas, any tips are welcome
I have never been to China so I can't speak first hand, but I thought I would just add a few common sense tips for you.
As previously mentioned, study their culture, language, and way of life. That's very important if you want to fit in. Buy books, research online, and study their history as well.
I am sure you can use your phone. China is a very advanced country, so any technology concerns you have shouldn't be an issue. Consider a long distance plan if you don't have one already. It shouldn't matter what colors you wear, and there will be plenty of American food there, I am sure.
As far as the atmosphere, (clean/dirty, friendly/mean) I am once again sure that it is the same as any other place you would go. Some people will be friendly, others will be mean. Some places will be clean, other places will be dirty. Just make sure not to get lost. Know the tourist attractions and try sticking to them until you get comfortable.
Keep pepper spray with you at all times. That is very important. Locals can probably scope out a tourist from a mile away, and any of them could take advantage of you. I have heard not to eat the watermelon there. I don't know why, or the story behind it, but it's always worth knowing. :)
Although you are going to study, I am sure you are going to want to have fun as well. Be safe. Don't give anyone you don't know directions to where you are staying, and don't go anywhere alone with anyone. If you have sex, use protection and use caution. But have fun! This is an exiting experience and you should take full advantage of it! :)

So instead of getting normal gifts for each other for the holidays, my best friend and I have decided to make each other posters for our dorm rooms next year at college. I used red poster board and cut it into a heart to start with. It's not terribly big, so should I make the photos smaller and just print them instead of getting them developed? I want to put a lot of stuff on it and my printer can make smaller quality prints. I don't know what else to add though? I was thinking of cutting out sayings from magazines. I also wanted to get her a couple of side gifts that pertain to college. I was going to buy a pair of flip flops and write 'shower shoes' on them haha. What else could I make for her that would be useful in college? Thanks. - 17/f
Everything sounds great for the poster. For the side gifts, consider making a gift basket. The flipflops are a great idea. Try some small snacks (popcorn, chips, candies) for late night study sessions, Burt's Bees lip balm, hand salve, etc, fleece blanket, you get the idea.
You can google this and find lots of things.

So, for my college essay I was thinking of writing about a point in my life when I basically had to cut all my hair off because it was falling out. I'm a female, and at the time short hairstyles weren't in fashion and we know how society judges people. I am also an African American so the pressure of keeping up to date is even worse in my opinion, compared to any other race. But,my goal isn't to make the person who's reading my essay pity me or whatever. I built my self confidence and learned to deal with the troubles that life sometimes offer and how i over came my obstacles. Do you get how i'm trying to come across? do you think this is a good topic choice? What do you think?
Anything could be a good or bad topic depending on how you write the essay. It's all about how you portray yourself and your writing style. As long as you veer away from the self pity, I think it would be an excellent choice. Be sure to focus the essay more on what you learned from the experience and how it affected you in the long run as opposed to the superficial aspect of losing your hair and it should turn out to be an amazing paper. Good luck :)

My best friend and I want to apply to college together. She wants to go to school for art, and I want to go for writing.
Any recommended colleges supporting both these as majors?
You will both want to go to some school that is known for their Liberal Arts program. I have one not 15 minutes away, and since I want to teach I am getting a Bachelor's in Liberal Arts and Sciences. You'll want to find a school who is known for that kind of program. Since I don't know where you live, I can't give a specific name of one. But basically that program covers art, literature, writing, history, etc. :)

im a freshman in college so i've only been here about 4 weeks. and i have some major questions.
1. at the moment im a biology major because i want to be a radiology technician so pre-med requires either a bio or chem major... i hate both of those, so i'm pretty miserable. how exactly do you go about changing majors? like could i just walk up in there one day and be like i want a different major and have to get all my classes changed all of a sudden?
2. i'm not sure what exactly i want to do. i'm in between physical therapy [specializing in athletics], radiology, or forensic investigation. soo.. like what the heck i dont even know what to do? how do i talk to an advisor when each "college" has its own advisor and they're geared towards taking classes in a particular subject. like how do i get this shit figured out and learn what i want to do so i dont screw around for a year taking classes i dont need.
3. we're already being told to make appointments with our advisors about registering for classes next semester, but again, everything from #2 comes up. and next semester would just be the same classes i have now pretty much [biology, chem, english, & calculus] but just the 2nd part of them.
4. i know for radiology there are a lot of tech schools that have 2 year programs where you can graduate with an associates degree to be a technician. so let's say i do 4 years at this university that i'm at now, get a bachelor's degree in.. something?... and then decide to be a radiology technician. will i still have to do the 2 year associate's degree even though i have a bachelor's degree already?
i'm sooooo confused as to how this works, and i'm really feeling the pressure to get it straightened out. i know that PLENTY of people come to college in between career paths, or have NO idea what they want to do and i'm not alone, but it seems like everyone i meet knows exactly what they want and are doing so well in their classes because it IS what they want. ahhh. help!?
Just relax. Your advisor is there for a reason, and he or she can help you answer all of these questions. I can tell you that you have absolutely nothing to worry about, so you can calm down a little bit.
If you want to change majors, tell your advisor. You really don't have to do that until your second sememster or even your second year. There is no point in doing it now. I am in a similiar situation. I also just started school, and when I was signing up for college and my classes, we had to choose a major. I chose General Studies. Basically that just means you are taking your core classes until you decide what it is you want to do. I plan on changing my major to Education next semester.
It's okay to not know what you want to do because regardless you have certain classes you have to take, such as; biology, English, math, history, et cetera. Depending on what you want to do, you continue with certain classes. For example, since you want to be a biology major, you would continue taking biology classes until you graduate and I would stop after two semesters because that's all the science I need. So really you have nothing to worry about this semester. You would still have to take all those classes regardless of what you want to do, so you aren't wasting any time. Colleges usually suggest to know what you want to major in by your second year. By then you will know if you like biology, and if that's what you want to major in.
You can get an associate's degree for Radiology, but you will make more money and have a better chance at getting a job if you have a bachelor's. If you had a bachelor's degree in let's say, English, and you decided to be a radiology technician, what you would probably do is take all the classes that you would normally have to take to be a technician that you didn't already take while getting your bachelor's. Then you would have a bachelor's in English, and an associate's in Radiology.
Don't feel pressured. Just talk to your advisor and ask everything you asked in your question. They are there to help you, so let them do their job! :)

Im supposed to be going away to school this fall. I graduated in 2008 and stayed home for my first year and commuted to community college but Ive been accepted to a state university and am supposed to start. My main problem is I dont really want to go, I know that I will have a hard time finding good jobs and such if I don't. But I just really dont want to go. Do you think I should? Or should I stick around and try to find a job somewhere?
You should go to college. It's very important to get a college education, more now than ever with today's society being as bad as it is. But the decision is ultimately up to you.
If you were accepted into a university, then you should go. You've already went to community college, so why not finish your education? You may be able to find a job, but it's not going to be a good one. You will regret it about ten years from now when you can't pay your bills.
Go to college :)

Which school has a better Pre med program and why? If anybody knows somebody or attends these schools, what does it take to get in? I'd like to be a dermatologist, I'm not seriously in any clubs, im going to cheer, dance and sing all 4 years of high school, i've been cheer captain, highest singing and second highest dance class though, with a cumulative 3.5 gpa my sophmore year. I plan on joining Nu Delta Alpha and NHS for my last two years in high school if this helps.
I don't know anything about Georgetown, but I know a little about UVA. I'll be transfering to the UVA branch in Wise in a couple years. I have also been to UVA a few times to see a kindney specialist. That place is huge by the way!
I am sure both schools are tough to get into, and it's a good thing you are getting a head start on your future. Remember that you are only a sophomore though. You have plenty of time to decide what you want to do and where you want to go, and even change your mind if you'd like. Regardless of where you decide to go, the fact that you have so many extra-curricular activities is a good thing. So keep that up. :)

Ive been trying to find colleges or some sort of school that offer sonogram technican classes.
The college has to be in Louisiana and I cant find any college anywheeeeeere.
Heeelp please :)
I wanted to be a Sonagrapher for a while, but I couldn't find any schools close enough to where I live either. I've talked to many councelors, colleges, and professors about this, and I finally figured out what had to be done if I wanted to pursue this career. I had 3 options:
1. Go to the only semi-close school near me that has a major for diagnostic imaging. The closest one to me is Morehead University in Kentucky, and sadly, that's not very close.
2. Go to a community college that offers the 2 year ultrasound technician program, and the closest was VA Beach. Once again, not very close.
3. Get a certificate to become a radiology technician, find a clinic or hospital to hire me, and be trained on the job in the ultrasound department. A radiology professor that I talked to told me that this option is becoming less and less available for liability reasons or something like that.
Anyways, not a very easy profession to go into if there aren't any schools near you obviously. I attached a website below that has a list of all the schools that offer the program by city in Louisiana. Keep in mind though that this may not be accurate, or even up to date. Some schools that have offered it in the past may not offer it now, or schools that have not previously offered may now. So you should really talk to your guidance councelor at school and have him/her help you. That's who helped me find out who I need to talk to. Good luck :)

I am a freshman in college, and there is this guy in two of my classes who absolutely confuses me, and I have never dealt w/ or heard of anyone quite like him before. I have to deal with him some b/c one of the classes we're in together does a lot of group work.
He's older, like 27 and he's been in college once, got bad grades, and came back. Some of the faculty in my dept. said he got bad grades b/c he partied too much, slept around, and took a lot of drugs, but I've heard rumors around campus that he got kicked out for being a stalker. But in class, he's really stand-offish to me and every other girl, but me especially because I said something in class about being a Christian. Like he'll talk to the guys in the class, but not the girls. When I asked him if he had a problem w/ me being a Christian, he said "Look, I only want to get along w/ you well enough to pass this class; I don't want to know you once this class ends b/c Christian chicks and I never work out as friends." A lot of the people who've known him from when he was here before go on and on about how nice and smart he is, and he seems to be-to the guys. Since I'm a theater major, sex comes up a lot, and this guy has proclaimed him "post-sexual" (whatev that means) and says that he'll never have sex again. Since when do guys say that?
From everything I've described, what on earth is up w/ this guy, do you think?
I think he sounds fine. Everyone has different personalities, and apparently so does he.
There is nothing wrong with coming back to college. If at first you don't succeed, try again ;) Whether he was kicked out or dropped out really isn't any of your (or anyone else's) business. If the stalking rumors are true [which I doubt], then unless/until it becomes a personal problem or threat to you, don't concern yourself with it.
What he does or has done in bed isn't really anything to concern yourself with. Maybe he is an attention-seeker. Which is why he says things that he does. If it bothers you, you don't have to talk to him. You can do what he says, and just get along with him as much as needed for school. Why he doesn't get along with Christian girls is beyone me. But maybe he has just had some bad experiences with overly preachy girls. If that's the case, and you really care enough to prove him otherwise, don't bring up religion. Maybe he just doesn't believe in the same things you do, and there isn't anything wrong with that.
I think unless you are wanting to start a friendship with this guy, you should't worry about it. People are different, and unless it's effecting you, the reason for his odd behavior shouldn't really matter.
I was rated a ♥
