if space wasnt there then what would be?

Good question. But define "space": "noun: the unlimited expanse in which everything is located" (ask jeeves). No one really knows. And technically, we are in space right now. So, where does space actaully begin? or end? Do you mean the dark matter in the vaccum of "space"? If that's the direction your'e going in, then, it could be anything. But it's the way it is for a reason; dark matter. Why? We may never know.
