advice

I am not Christian, but an answer from Christians or non-christians will work. Why is it that many things in the bible tell you to do and believe things that in America are illegal and also seem VERY immoral and hateful. I thought we were supposed to love our neighbor as ourself? For instance; deuteronomy 21:18-21; it is saying basically to kill teen girls for no reason; and Exodus 35:2; it is saying that if you work on sabbath or sunday then you should be killed; also deuteronomy 22:13-21; it says that girls that are not virgins when they marry are to be killed, what about rape? and plus, just because someone makes a mistake they should be killed? I am so confused. I was once Christian but not anymore...
Thanks for your advice, if you can answer these...

i am truthfully not a christian because of the things you have said. people believe what they want to believe... much of the time they only listen to the preacher, who can say whatever he wants. also in the bible (though not sure where), it says that if a man rapes a woman then they have to get married. so obviously laws like that don't apply anymore, yet people get all bent out of shape over gay marriage and abortion and the like- saying stuff like "god hates the homosexuals" or whatever, but how is working on sunday an okay thing then? that's my reasoning on the "believe what you want" thing. the fact of the matter is that the bible was not written by god... it was written by man. the gospels were not written until 40 years after jesus had died. so over time it's pretty likely that the text we have today is not accurate. that's why i don't live by the bible really... it's a great story, and i still read it. but i am more of a spiritual person than a religious person (and there's a difference, much to the dismay of some christians). many christians assume that nonchristians don't have morals, which is technically by their rules an "unchristian" thing to do... it's just a mess, honestly. i'm not sure who came up with this idea, but they said that "to be a christian is to have a childlike belief in god" meaning that you believe wholeheartedly and without question. i have a problem with that, so i label myself as a spiritual person more than a religious person.

ok so im a freshman and we just started picking classes for next year in school. for science this year i took honors biology and im trying to decide if i want to take ap chem or just honors chem next year. im a really good student and i know taking ap would look great for college but on the other hand i dont want to take a class that i cant pass and make my sophomore year way too stressful. i do plan on going to a top college, possibly ivy league. im also one of those people whos not happy unless they have an A in a class haha. so any advice from sophomores currently taking ap chem would be great, or anyone taking it/taken it in the past for that matter!
thank you in advance =)

the person below me is right, chemistry isn't for everyone- i completely sucked at biology (i'm a good student too) yet i rock at chemistry. so it depends, you may love it. anyway, if you plan on going into ivy league possibly, definitely try to take ap chem. you can always drop it and go into honors instead if it's too hard, but if you can keep a good grade in the ap class then colleges will love that- they also look at the difficulty of class you're trying, and how much you try in it. it is much more impressive when someone makes a B in a hard class than when they make an A in a regular class (when they could have taken the hard class). if you think that you can handle it, then by all means try it! but it would be easier for you to get out of it than to get into it if you ever change your mind :)

We have to present a song with political meaning for my political science class and i was wondering if anyone had any ideas for a song to use. So far the only ideas i have are:

Like Toy Soldiers -- Eminem
Dear mr. president -- Pink

I can't do Bruce Springstein because thats the example we were given.

Thank you for your suggestions!

"Belief" - John Mayer
There's more detailed description of that one on songmeanings.net than I could give you here.

"Everybody Wake Up" - Dave Matthews Band
"Everybody wake up
if you're living with your eyes closed
See the man with the bomb in his hands
Everybody wake up."
That one's pretty self-explanatory.

and, of course:
"Revolution" - the Beatles
"You say you want a revolution, yeah, you know
We all want to change the world."

Why do some people think that saying Jesus's name in vain is okay while saying God's name in vain isn't? Yeah, God is our Lord but Jesus is still a higher being.

Not that my religious view matter in this question but I am not Christian which might explain my perplexity to the situation.

In class today we were reading a play and my teacher announced that if we come by a profound word we do not have to say it. A student in my class came across "God!" as she was reading out loud and replaced the word with "Jesus!" because she claimed saying God's name in vain is wrong. I know this girl is Christian.

I completely agree that we should not use God's name in vain but why should Jesus's name be any different? I of course snapped at the girl and asked about the situation. She could not give me a straight answer so I'm wondering if someone else can. Or was she just an idiotic high school student

Before this question, it had never really occurred to me that one would be worse than the other. And I admit it- I say both. I would like to say that she's an idiotic high school student (though that's redundant... seriously, we are all idiots...) but you've just gotta respect other people's beliefs and move on with it. There are people at my school that come up with way weirder crap than that, and I just have to ignore it because it would be pointless to argue with it. Anyway, I'm around very devout Christians a lot (truthfully I'm the "black sheep" when it comes to religion) and I get scolded equally for saying either in front of them. Going along with the Ten Commandments thing, they consider the Lord to be both God and Jesus. So I'm thinking that since she couldn't give you a straight answer... there really isn't a straight answer.

when i run on the treadmill, say i burn 300 calories.
since everyone says running gives you the quickest results, would i not get the same results if i go on the elliptical and burn 300 calories?

and what are other really effective ways to lost weight quickly.
i wanna weigh like 115 by july, and i'm 150 now.
14/f.

it kind of depends. running is generally more of a cardio/fat burning exercise. yes, it does build leg muscles, but an elliptical would probably build more muscle. if you're aiming to physically be smaller and lose weight at the same time, i think running would be your best choice, though you can trade off between running and the elliptical (which is good too). they say swimming is the best exercise, and i say that running is second to that. so if you want to, do the treadmill one day and the elliptical the next. if you trade off, it will be easier to tell which one is better for you. if you eat really healthy, i think your target weight loss is reasonable.

i know this is kind of stupid. but if a guy asks you to have coffee with him would it be called a date? i've only been friends with him for less than a week, he's a nice guy but he doesn't make me laugh and he's not my type. should i say yes to someone like that?

i'd give him the benefit of the doubt and say yes- but make sure that if he mentions it being a "date" or even seeing you again or something, stress to him that you only want to be friends. i mean, for all we know, you could have the time of your life with this guy... however, if he starts hinting at being more than friends, it's best to cut it off (especially if you have no feelings for him whatsoever).

does it matter how you exercise/what you do or the fact that you exercise?

since its winter its still freezing out and i dont want to get a gym membership bc those never work out. indoors, videos get boring fast.

i was wondering if it were possible to loose weight if i just did jumping jacks and jumped rope for an hour each day? i heard 5 mins of rope is like running for half an hour.

jumping rope is awesome exercise. it's so freaking hard- i considered myself in shape until i tried to jump rope. i seriously fell over. but yes, it does burn a lot of calories and it's cardio too which is good for your heart. another part of losing weight is eating healthy too, so keep that in mind.

Is there any FREE trial or full program that I could use to edit a song.
By edit I mean cut it shorter.
I use my music as ringtones, and I want a certain part of some songs.
Is there any program I could use to do this?

Thanks!

audacity is amazing! i highly recommend it. it can export clips of songs as mp3 and then you can send it to your phone. and, it's free :)

how do you get static electricity and how do you remove it? (from hair)

if your hair is dry and has static electricity, a great way to remove it is to rub a dryer sheet in your hair. i haven't found anything that works better, to be honest.

what are the best exersizes to do for lower abs?and quick

the best exercise i've done is where you lay on the ground on your back. then, keeping your back on the ground, bring your legs up so that they're vertical (but keep them together and toes pointed). then bring them back down to the ground, but try not to let them touch the ground. it's going to really hurt. then bring them back up, back down, so on and so forth. this gave me good results.

I read some stuff and researched on how to write a bibliography for SITES but i don't get it =/. Why do you have to list so much? In my school, we made a chart: list the date that we found the site and write the url.

But on the site that i found, it says:
-
Website
Lynch, Tim. "DSN Trials and Tribble-ations Review." Psi Phi: Bradley's
Science Fiction Club. 1996. Bradley University. 8 Oct. 1997 .
-

What's the stuff at the top line? What if i site i found isn't really professional and had nothing but a tiny bit of information that i used?

Can anyone set an example of a bibliography using this site for me or tell me about it in a more better detail? Thanky uo so much!
http://www.skimarmot.com/about_jasper.html

ok, so i'm going to assume that the form you're using is MLA- what the majority of english teachers in the US would want. here is a cite that i had to do for a project:
Dominguez, J. “All About Confucianism.” May 2006. Description and Personal Opinion of the World Religions and 101 Cults and Sects. 16 Nov. 2007 .

ok, so here's how you cite it:

Last Name, First Name. "Title of the Article or Page on the Website." Month and Year it was Published on the Website. Title of the Website itself. Date that you accessed the website (written in date, abbreviated month, year form) .

^that is a very very common way and you will be in good shape if you use it, unless your teacher gave you specific instructions to do something completely different, which would be a dumb thing to do in the first place.

if you have to follow that format and there's info missing, then just leave that info out. if you didn't know the date the stuff was published on the website, it's ok to leave that out. or if there's not an author, it's ok to leave that out too. here's what i would consider the bare minimum:

"Title of the Article or Page on the Website." Title of the Website itself. Date that you accessed the website (written in date, abbreviated month, year form) .

if you're having lots of trouble, go ahead and ask your teacher or the school librarian. this stuff is confusing so it's better to ask for help than to just be confused :)

Okay, I'm writing a story and I'm stuck because I'm basically a hermit so I don't know these things.

The story is about 2 teenagers who go out, but aren't supposed to because they're from two different groups. The boy goes to a private school and the girl goes to a public school.

Anyway they're skipping school to go on their first date, where should it be?

Of course I'm not going to ask what should happen, as it is my story and up to me. But I need a bit of a push of where the location should be so I can make up a story behind it.

It can be anywhere, it doesn't even have to make sense. Thanks a lot!

i've always thought it would be cute to go to a ballroom dancing class (swing, waltz, whatever) on a first date. that might be weird for your story though.

ok the music video had the girl singer(lady) with i think brown hair.she was singing then she went to a playgrtound thin she went on a spinny thing and like 5 boys started pushing so it would spin.and in part of the song she says this "bah bah bah, bah bah bah,bah bah bah, who are they where are they.this is the theme song for that movie called X's or O's.its a cheating and daTING SHOW

i think it is called "they" by jem... here are the lyrics that i can remember off the top of my head...

"who are they
where are they
how do they
know all this
do you see
what i see
how can they
know all this"

"who made up all the rules
we follow them like fools
believe them to be true
don't care to think them through"

i think i've seen that music video before too so i think this is the song you're talking about.

I have to walk in heels by the 8th of February. I have no clue how!!! Once I tried and I twisted my ankle. help???

http://www.wikihow.com/Walk-in-High-Heels

http://www.wikihow.com/Look-Good-Walking-in-Heels

those are some articles that really helped me- i wasn't able to wear high heels until last year, when i had to learn how to ballroom dance in them! it was crazy, but i got the hang of it from lots of practice- get some low heels and practice walking around your house. it's good to try to stand up very straight and pretend like there is a string coming out of the top of your head, attaching you to the ceiling (it's weird but it works). it's also good to pretend like you're balancing books on your head. try to roll your feet (heel-toe) and try not to put your whole foot down at the same time because it makes a loud stomping noise. good luck! :)

There's a dance coming up and I need a new dress to wear but my family's on a really tight budget right now so I can't spend like $50 on one dress.
So I'm looking for cute cocktail dresses that are under 50. And I'd really prefer websites that have an actual store too. Thanks.

http://www3.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6.aspx?DeptID=50455&CatID=56312&GrpTyp=PRD&ItemID=1249de0&attrtype=&attrvalue=&CmCatId=50455|51280|56312

here's one that i was actually going to buy. another good place to try would be t.j. maxx- they don't have a website because their stuff varies from store to store. jcpenney has a lot more cute dresses that are cheap, but that one is my favorite.

Hi there. So, I'm in a bit of a dilemma these days. I'm at a fork in the road where I have to make a decision that might change the rest of my life. Let me just get to it.

A few months ago I got to hang out with a friend of mine... we begun to really hang out a lot, go on trips together, and just have a great time in each other's company. I began to realize that she is an incredible person who I could actually see myself possibly settling with. Nothing physical happened, though, b/c she is getting out of a long-term relationship and wasn't ready emotionally to move on yet. We just enjoyed hanging out with each other (practically everyday for 2 months) but, didn't talk about moving forward b/c of reason mentioned above. She's not from the U.S. and has recently traveled back to her home country to take care of a few things but, plans on being back here in a few months...

On the job front, I've just been potentially been offered a position that would start in a few weeks. The thing is, the job goes until October and, once I'm there, there's no leaving, visitors, packages sent, or any other contact other than e-mail and an occasional phone call. Except for the 40 or so other folks I'd be working with, it's total isolation. This is what I believe to be a once in a lifetime opportunity and, I could use the money. Like I said, I'd have to stay there until October at the minimum.

So, do I forget about the job, go after this incredible woman and hope something comes of it or do I take the once in a lifetime job and hope that she's still available/interested when I get back?

Ii just read that I should include my age, as it might make a difference... I'm in my early 30's.

i agree with jack.

since you're not technically in a relationship with her yet, i would go for the job. you can explain to her that you do have feelings for her and would like to pursue a relationship at some point, but right now the job is the best thing for you. besides, if it does work out between you two, if you have a high-paying job, you will definitely be able to support yourself and her. if she is as awesome as you say she is, she will understand. i know that i would. but talk to her about it before you take the job. that's the key here. the job is something that can be set in stone- however, at this point she is not.

Okay, I know what to do on the essay, but the problem is that i don't know examples and i don't know what these words mean. Part of it says that i need to describe the difference between subsistence agriculture and market oriented agriculture. And the difference between cottage industries and commercial industries. What are cottage industries and such? i read some definitions.. but i don't understand still, can you give me an example so i can understand it easier?

subsistence agriculture is when you only grow enough food for your family, like a small vegetable garden. market oriented agriculture is where you grow enough to sell to make a living... like a really huge farm. one thing that i learned about both of these is that back in prehistory, everybody had the same job- caring for their own individual family. but then the different types of farming developed and people were able to choose different professions- like artisans- that would pay enough money so that they could either buy what food they needed or grow only enough for themselves. so there were farmers who grew all the food, and then other townspeople who had different jobs. a cottage industry is when products are manufactured in a home or something- hence the name cottage. it basically means small-scale, and a few hundred years ago it meant that the whole family was involved. this was probably for making things like cloth, which takes forever to make. commercial industries are the opposite- they are very large-scale and manufacture products in factories. i hope this helped... it sounds like it's just comparing opposites i suppose.
