I'm a violist / artist / programmer who can't make up her mind about her major in college. Too many choices, all of them good. I know that computer science will be in there, but beyond that I'm not positive.

I love Veggie Tales and want to go into computer animation. Someday. Other dreams include playing a concerto with a professional orchestra and going to Europe and visiting all the cool art museums.

I'm pretty good with computer hardware issues, having built my own computer from scratch. I also know a bit of troubleshooting, so I'll give it my best shot.

The only job I've ever held is that of a lifeguard, and I've been doing that for almost three years now.

In addition to all this, I'm learning to be a pretty decent Ramen noodle chef.

I'll do my best to answer any questions you would like to ask. :)

I have been going out with this boy for 4 mnths and i really care about him. I feel like everything thats going wrong in school or home i take it out on him and he will think i'm acting to bitchy and i'm scared of him breaking up with me. what should i do? (link)
I have this with one of my best guy friends. Whenever life in general pisses me off, I generally end up ranting at him about it. Usually this is because he says something stupid to make me angry, though the past couple times it's been because he asked me how I was doing and I told him exactly how I felt about the world as we know it. I used to feel bad about yelling at him all the time, but we've come to the understanding that it's nothing personal against him on my part, I'm just a fairly emotional person who needs to let that sort of stuff vent. If you yell at him one day, just be sure to apologize the next. Eventually he'll realize the same thing my friend did. At least we can all hope so.

Will I survive the hebrew school sleepover this weekend? (link)
Indeed, you shall.

I was asked to bring a "nice traditional pie" to a family dinner. A few months ago I brought key lime, and people didn't think it was "traditional" enough. What gives? I mean, seriously?

So what's a traditional pie? Should I even bother conforming, or just bring whatever I want? (link)
You can never go wrong with pumpkin pie. Especially with lots of whipped cream. However, your family sounds like they need some exposure to some other kinds of pie. French silk is wonderful, as is banana cream pie.

If you want to bring a rather unorthodox kind of pie, bring 3.14159265358979.....

If toast always lands butter-side down, and cats always land on their feet, what happens if you strap toast to a cat and drop it? My first friend said that the cat would eat the toast. My 2nd friend wanted to know what kind of toast: rye, or sourdough, and when I said it was regular white bread, she bit me. I said that the cat and toast would be sucked into a rift in the space-time continuum and the world would end. Who is right? (link)
This is an interestng dilemma, and several things could happen. However, if we were to write, say, a program trying to demonstrate this, you'd never get as far as the execution stage. The compiler would zap you where you stood for the contradiction. Either that or you might end up sending it into some sort of infinite loop, in which case, neither the cat nor the butter would ever hit the ground. Personally, I like the infinite loop theory.

In your profile it says that you are a 'violist'. Does that mean that you play the viola?

I work in a music store selling musical instruments. I for one, play the flute...so I know almost Zilch about strings...

Do most violists start off on the violin? What notes are viola strings tuned to? Is the viola a transposing instrument in that the notes that you play on paper are not actually what sounds?

There is one guy who plays the violin at work, yet he seems to be amused by any one who takes the viola seriously (when I try to ask a question...he veers off into a joke).

I love the sound of a viola by they way. Do you know of any prominent viola players?
(link)
Yes, I do indeed play the viola. It's the best instrument in the world as far as I'm concerned, but I'm probably biased on that point.

I actually did get my start on violin, as do a number of violists, but I also know a LOT of violists that did start on the viola. The only reason I started on violin was convenience- we had one my size lying around the house doing nothing, so I wanted to learn to play it. After about five years of playing it, I got sick of it. After another five years, my parents let me try viola, and after a year they let me drop the violin entirely.

The viola is tuned C, G, D, A. This is exactly one fifth lower than the violin. It's not a transposing instrument, though most wind/brass players I've talked to think it ought to be. But it's not. Essentially, think of adding an extra string on the low end of the violin and taking away that horrid E string. Then make the body two inches longer, the height of the instrument taller, and you've got a viola.

I'm also familiar with about any viola joke anyone can throw at me. I've probably read them all. People who don't take the viola seriously (like, ever) really annoy me. For one, linguistic roots suggest that the viola came first, so without the viola, there would BE no violin. Second of all, our repertoire might not be as big, but that doesn't mean that we can't find any of "our own" music. There are some real gems out there. I just got this one piece, Chahagir, by Alan Hovhaness, and it's so awesome. It's very middle-eastern sounding, and has lots of C-string chord action going on. There's also a high-quality double viola concerto by Bach, Brandenburg 6. And that particular piece is a concerto that contains *ahem* absolutely no violins. If you haven't heard it, I strongly recommend finding a recording of it.

As for prominent viola players, the only one I can think of off the top of my head that is currently prominent is Kim Kashkashian. Other famous violists include William Primrose and Lionel Tertis. For further information on the viola, I suggest checking out http://www.viola.com. It's an excellent resource for the viola and violists.

Should you have any further viola questions, I'd be happy to answer. :)

Why aren't you married yet? (link)
Well, for starters, this is just my first year of college. I'd like to get through at least my bachelor's degree before I get married.

For another thing, I've never had a boyfriend. This is a slight deterrent to getting married, though not in some cultures. However, I am perpetually single. It's a good life.

Someday I'll find that special guy who can love my for my psychotic little self. And on that day, the heavens will rejoice. :D

There is this person who i hate but she thinks i'm her friend. My best friend feels the same way as i do and right now they are in an all out war. She won't understand that my friend and i don't want her around. How do i make her understand without hurting her too much? (link)
You might try dropping hints for a while, but if she doesn't pick up on it, you may have to be a bit more blatant. It's never pleasant telling anyone you don't enjoy her company, but sometimes it just has to be done. Just don't be malicious about it.

These are some of the singers I like:
Simon & Garfunkel
Indigo Girls
Christine Kane
Paul Simon
James Taylor
They Might Be Giants
Dar Williams
Woody Guthrie
Natalie Merchant
Other CDs I own include Edith Piaf, The Canadian Brass Ensemble, The Charlie Daniels Band, Enya, Counting Crows, and soundtracks for Fiddler on the Roof, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Sister Act.

What other artists/bands might you suggest that I might like? (link)
You like Enya? Maybe you should check out the soundtracks for the Lord of the Rings movies. High quality stuff.

What's the best kind of peanut butter? (link)
I'm a big fan of JIF. Then again, it's the only kind they sell at Decaf. It has my stamp of approval, though.

Which is better, brownies made from brownie mix or brownies made from scratch? (link)
It depends on the recipe. Some box recipes are pretty vile. Others are pretty darn good. Baking from scratch is also fun, too, though. A while ago a friend of mine had a cake party and baked a layer cake from scratch. It was to die for. Of course, these recipes can go awry, too. So it just comes down to personal preference, I guess.

Everybody in my school has already had like 10 boy/girl friends... I've had none. Thats right... zip, zero, zilch! They all say how great it is to be hooked up, and they always have someone to dance with at activity nite. I have nobody!

Sincerely,
BoyCrazy (link)
THOU SHALT NOT NEED A BOYFRIEND. Seriously, no. I went through a phase where I *thought* I needed one, when a bunch of my other friends were getting boyfriends, but here's the end result: both the guys I liked turned out to be jerks (and this became apparent before I ever got the chance to even ask them out). Guys are fun to hang out with and just chill, but there's no reason why anyone ever NEEDS a boyfriend.

there is this guy who just asked me to homecoming. i dont really like him so i said that i would think about it, and fortunately for me a guy i like asked me and i said yes, now i dont know how to tell him that i am going with someone else because he was really expecting to go with me. how should i tell him i am going with someone else?b (link)
You should tell him and not delay it anymore than you have to. This happened to me for my senior prom, except I was on the recieving end. It wasn't particularly fun, but one thing I can tell you for sure is that I have a lot more respect for this guy today because he was honest with me. It was a slightly different situation, but he still had to get the guts up to tell me. It was worth it.

Where are my gray socks? (link)
I ate them. They made a delicious meal with instant cheese.

I own all this awesome modern purple furniture, but my realitor just showed me a house decorated in traditional hunter green. Think I'll be able to make it work, or should I not even think about it? I can't afford to have carpets and wallpaper replaced, but I really like this house. (link)
I always kind of thought that purple and green looked really good together, actually. There are definitely ways to make it work. I suggest perhaps buying purple and green accents to put in the room (like purple flowers with green leaves), buy hunter green accent pillows for the furniture, etc. If worse comes to worst, make slipcovers for your purple furniture. Slipcovers cover a multitude of sins.

If you're too shy to ask someone out in person is it creepy to write them a note? (link)
In my experience, talking face-to-face is always a much better form of communication than a letter. Letters can be read over and over, analyzed, and misanalyzed. That and they're much more impersonal. Sometimes they're just fine, but certain things should be done in person. Among these are a) asking someone out b) 'fessing up and apologizing c) conflict management, and d) I don't really have a fourth one, but the answer wanted an option d.

You can write him a note saying you wish to talk to him, but I reccommend against asking him out in a note.

I'm eating too much unhealthy junk food. What are some healthy snacks I can eat instead of chips and sodas? (link)
Peanut butter and ritz crackers are good for all occasions. I also suggest eating (healthy) cereal, as it is not only a breakfast food. Fruit is always an option as well.

As for drinks, juice is generally healthier than soda, although some types are better than others. Try to avoid overly sugary drinks. If all else fails, water and milk will serve you well.
