Hi guys so my bf n i have been dating for 9 months now n in 10 days we both will be in a different country ... i will be in canada n he will be in swiss ... before he leave i wanted to give him sth special .. we have a date next week n i have no clue wat to get him .. over the 9 months i gave him tonnes of stuff .. keychains tshirts ... chocolate .. n a scarf tht i made him .. but now i need some idead that would just blow his mind .. plus he gave meh a ring yesterday .. a couple ring .. so i was wondering if u guys could help meh out! thx

One good gift would be anything Canada related, just so he can think about home.

What I would do is get a picture frame with Canadian flags on it and put a picture of you two in it. Then write a little note on the back, saying you'll miss him. Then he can look at your faces/read your note whenever he misses you!

Hello.

I pretty much understand the whole weight loss thing. My question is about calories.

Now everyone (including myself) always says that you need to burn more calories than you consume to lose weight. This seems pretty straight forward, but does that actually mean:

You eat 2500 calories a day
You need to burn AT LEAST 2501 calories to start to lose anything?

Because one day, I walked constantly for 7 hours. It wasn't planned: me and a friend walked to the city, browsed shops, then just took a long walk as the sun set, and then walked home. I used to have an app on my iPod Touch. You put in how much exercise you've done, and what you've eaten. I put "brisk walking, 7 hours" in, and it only said I burned 1600 calories?! So I would have had to burn 900 more calories (assuming I consume 2500 calories a day) ? Because that seems crazy. My body felt like jelly after all that walking, and I still needed to do MORE just to lose weight?

Any guidance?

Thanks!

Yes. To lose one pound, you must burn 3500 calories.

Now, keep in mind, that for most people the average basal metabolic rate is around 1800 calories. This is throughout a day, doing sedentary things such as sleeping, showering, food prep, cleaning around the house, you know typical things that wouldn't be considered "physical activity". Now if you walk for 7 hours, you are going to burn at LEAST ~1000 calories (walking is about 200 cals/hour).... That being said you are either on your way to losing weight or you need to eat some more if you are trying to maintain weight.

So, on this day, you probably burned at least 2700 calories, because you are always burning calories, even while you sleep. What I am trying to say is that your body wasn't only burning calories when you walked through the city, it was doing it before and after as well. You would've burned those "other 900 calories" you mentioned at some other point of the day, for sure.

Let me know if you have any more similar questions! xx

Okay, so I've been single for a while... And lately, I cant help but feel lonely. I miss the feeling of having someone to emotionally and physically comfort me. Sometimes, I feel that everyone is out, living their life as much as they can, and trying not to regret what they do.. Basically, they try not to have second thoughts about things they want to do, whether or not they should.
There's a guy that I used to be very good friends with, texting-wise. We never really met in person, until today. He lives many many states away. Today, I met him for the first time, after I drove to see him, very last minute. My sister came with me, so it made me feel a little more comfortable.
He is surprisingly attractive.. Not VERY attractive, but seems decent. He's a year younger than me but he's very mature. Anyway, the guy has a girlfriend, as of maybe two days ago. She's not here with him. (He's visiting my state for business purposes).
When we used to talk all the time, we had some really intense, flirty conversations. He told me that when we meet, we would have sex...
We met, and of course that didn't happen.. but he wants me to meet him again.. He asked me what I thought of him and I described him as having an innocent-looking face.. no sexual innuendo intended. But then, he replied "come thru this week and I'll show you how innocent I am ;) "
he wants me to come back and visit him again.. Now, I'm worried. First of all, Im not the type of girl who would do a guy just for fun. I like the thought of it, it's sexy and all but... when it gets down to me actually being put in the situation, I feel all wrong on the inside... then the fact that he's involved, that's just wrong too. I wouldnt like it if my new boyfriend did that to me. I would like to go see him, but im afraid about what's going to happen.
The idea of having sex with him scares me... I'll feel guilty. I dont wanna mess up our friendship.. but its not like ill see him again so who cares... but yeah, still., im worried about everything.
what do you think I should do?

If you don't want to have sex with him, then don't! If you DO want to hang out with him again, do it in a scenario where you won't be alone, such as a double date on restaurant, or going to the movies with a few people. That way you can get to know him a bit better to work out your feelings and thoughts on him, while taking away all the pressure.

Goodluck:)xx

Hi I'm 21/f looking to go on a no/low carb diet for a week or so. Nearly all I eat is carbs. Lots of pasta and bread and sugars. Not much fruit and veg. I'm not very good at cooking and also I am a vegetarian but I don't like lentils or
Tofu etc. I will not eat any meat or fish but I will eat eggs, milk etc. I don't know where to start. I have no idea what to eat to go on this diet and google isn't helping. Can anyone give me any ideas?
Thanks so much

No carb diets are very very unhealthy and dangerous, as carbs are the primary fuel (glucose) to the brain. Now HI-CARB diets are what you should stay away from, but it is not good to completely cut carbs out. For example, fruits have carbs, because they have sugar. This doesn't mean you should avoid them, because they are "good carbs" when compared to something like fast food carbs, which are empty calories, whereas fruits have high nutritious contents. Now if "all you eat is carbs," switch to whole grain pastas and bread.

EXAMPLE - A good breakfast:
Egg on whole wheat toast with banana, blueberries, yogurt, and carrots. Drink orange juice and tea.
This has carbs, but it is very healthy and will promote weight loss by boosting your metabolism.

Let me know if you have more questions! I have taken many college courses on nutrition and would be happy to help, or let me know about your progress! Goodluck:)xx

i feel like i cant poop why ?????

Increase your fiber intake.
I would start every day eating a bowl of fiber one cereal. Within a week your constipation should be regulated.

Increase your consumption of whole grains, fruits and vegs, yogurt(!!), and water and you shouldn't have these problems any more.

Goodluck! :)xx

Does any of you know how to get rid of dry skin on your face? What creams or other products can I use to get rid of flaky dry sking on my face?

I use vaseline on my face. Now you only do a very, VERY THIN layer, as if you were putting on lotion. The reason I like it is because it is all natural, and doesn't have any trace amounts of alcohols or acids like many face creams do, even the higher end ones. It will moisturize you right up! I swear, I have nearly perfect skin and I legitimately attribute it to using vaseline before bed. When you wake up, your skin has comletely absorbed it and will feel soft and smooth.

In the day time, I use the Cetaphil lotion. It is lightweight, and gentle.

Let me know if you use the vaseline, and if it makes your skin smooth in the morning!
Goodluck!! :)xx

I'm talking to someone new (dude), What do I talk about? We don't really now anything about each other? So, what can I say to not mess it up? & how can I like flirt a little, but not to direct..?

Ask about him to get to know him. There are lots of things you can talk about. some examples:

-sports - fave teams, does he plan any
-hobbies
-movies
-music
-fave places to eat food...this one could lead to an "I've never been there" type thing, which could lead to a date
-favorite school classes
-summer plans, vacations, etc

Hello I'm 14 and I have the same problem I don't feel anything ... More like a shell ... I think this is due to being beaten in my child hood .. Iv stopped seeing carrie and tim as my mum and dad but more like stangers I know there's somtthing wrong with me due to being kicked out of school becuas I got in a fight and got abit carryed away and broke his arm :L and I don't feel happyness or anything like that but I just put on a happy face and lie to every one I know all the time know one really knows about my true self ....... I want to know is there anything I can to stop this?

You should definitely find someone to talk to, like your school counselor.
But to get out of this "shell" feeling I would say you should find a PASSION, and do it for 1 hour everyday, WITHOUT your parents. completely alone, you-time. Some suggestions I would make are practicing an instrument, or working out. I am a huge exercise endorser, so I would suggest every day you feel anger or are just alone, go into your room or the basement and just do 30 mins of exercises. Use youtube as a reference, and search "ab exercises no equipment", "legs exercises no equipment" "back strengthening exercises" and so on. If you do a few each day, I PROMISE you you will feel less of this "shell" feeling, though can't guarantee it will resolve the issues with your parents. Find something your passionate about, like an instrument or working out, and use it as an "escape" from your stressful life at home.
I hope things work out for you. If you ever need to talk, you can always contact me in my inbox. I am wishing the best for you. xx

There's this boy I like but I don't know how to tell him what would I say? I'm female and11years old

I would just go up to him and tell him "I've liked you for a while"...don't say you LOVE him...yet! It may overwhelm him to know that you've been crushing on him, so first let him know by saying "like," and then see how he responds. If he responds well, you can tell him you love him after a while!
GOODLUCK:) xx

ok so.. im 14 , girl with light brown hair, light blue eyes, average weight, i wear glasses, people say i have a beautiful smile....i smile alot... i like this guy (14) .we have been friends for 2 years or so now we just see eachother in school. nothing has happened between us. i have started to like him A LOT but the problem is he is a total man whore and loves sluts,he also smokes. i dont really know if he likes me, but i always see him looking at me while we are in class and he is always teasing me in a fun way, my friends say he likes me but i dont know. i dont think he would ever like a girl with glasses..... does he like me too, and if so should i go out with him even though he likes sluts and smokes?

A 14 year old who is already a smoker is a disgusting boy who is headed down a bad path. At this rate, he will probably impregnate a girl before he turns 18. RAISE YOUR STANDARDS!! You seem like a beautiful, sweet girl, and there IS a guy out there that is better than him for you!! And, no matter what, DO NOT START SMOKING!!!!! It is a dirty habit, a waste of money, and you're setting yourself up for health problems & gonna stunt and mess up your teenage years development!
Many fish in the sea, find a better one:) xx

13/f So last year my waist was 28 inches and I had an hourglass figure but this year I'm 29 inches and I no longer look like I have one. What can I do to get my hourglass figure back and trim back down to 28 inches or less?

OBLIQUES OBLIQUES OBLIQUES!!! these are the side muscles. regular/typical ab exercises that come to mind won't work out these muscle groups, such as crunches or sit-ups only work out the rectus abdominus, aka 6 pack muscles. The internal obliques and external obliques run diagonally on your sides.

Here are some exercises that will tone up your waist!

Let me know if this works for you, or if you are interested in other exercises!!

Okay, I'm an avid runner. I used to run in Asics, but I fell in love with Vibrams Five Fingers shoes and haven't switched back. Since I got them and worked up to being able to run in them, I've noticed a definite increase in strength, muscle-cuts, and general ability in my legs. That being said, I'm only up to running about 2 miles every other day. I try to be healthy, but I often find myself burning more calories than I'm consuming. I don't know if that has anything to do with... uh, anything.
But onto my actual question.
On the outside of my calves (both of them now, actually), I have a few spider veins... they're very thin, very small, and very close to the surface of my skin, it appears. I had a couple before I switched shoes, but now I have more, and they're on both legs. :(
Could my running be causing these? Is there any way to reverse them once they've appeared? Are they something to be concerned about, or are they really just cosmetic? My legs are just getting as cut as they should be, and now I want to hide them! Argh!
Thanks to everyone who answers.

Hi, I'm an avid runner as well. If you are burning more calories than you're consuming, that means you're losing weight, even if it's at the slow rate of 1-2 lb/week. I think this could lead to seeing the veins more, because there is less skin between the bone and surface, so they will "bulge out". Running paired with a healthy diet would actually diminish the appearance of veins, because it will improve your circulation. If it looks like they're "popping out," maybe you should up the calories just a bit on the days you run, otherwise they'll "bulge" in a hypertension-y way!

Hi there, 24/f.
This is a bit of a long history, but I'm running out of ideas.
I've had sleeping problems for the majority of my life. I remember when I was a kid and my mom would cuddle me to help me fall asleep, and she'd fall asleep and I'd be awake still.
Somewhere within my first few years of college, I caved and went to see a sleep specialist, because the insomnia was getting in the way of - well, everything. It used to be that I just couldn't fall asleep, and as a result frequently found myself awake for 24 hours or longer. Being a vocal performance student, that doesn't fly. So my doctor and I tried a few things, the best of which turned out to be Ambien.
I know it's not typical to take a sedative-hypnotic for long periods of time, but everything else I've tried gives me a feeling of being trapped in my dreams - somewhat like sleep paralysis, except I can't wake up, even though I'm consciously aware that I'm dreaming, and I wake up exhausted. I should've been diagnosed with a nightmare disorder, and I still have it (yay PTSD). My dreams are VIVID, and more often nightmarish than not. I get flashbacks to them throughout the day as if they really happened. I'm a writer, so I try to embrace these events and use them, or re-interpret them to be used in my work, but that doesn't always help.
Anyway.

Ambien has been my best friend for quite some time in the sense that it allows me to fall asleep. It doesn't knock me out, or cause me to sleep, it ALLOWS me to sleep. Lately I'm finding, though, that it doesn't last all the time. Last night around 10pm, I took one. I went to bed a little after 12, and woke right back up at 3:30. I'm exhausted. My eyes burn, and all I want to do is sleep...
I know I shouldn't worry about how I can't sleep, 'cause the stress will keep me up, but it's very frustrating.
I've tried just about everything and I have good sleep habits - dark room, only use my bed for sleep and sex, etc.
I'm tossing around the idea of just giving up - not fighting the insomnia anymore and hoping it runs its course and I can sleep again before I start feeling the effects of deprivation.

What would you do? Have any of you had this problem? Do you think I should try not trying?
I don't have a job or school right now, so this is kind of the ideal time to mess with my circadian rhythm. I'm just afraid it'll make my nice chronic pain condition worse. :\

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to read and try to help... I'm a mess. :(

HEY! I feel you girl, I am 20/f in college and also have irregular sleep problems. And the ambien and other sleeping aids can make you dependent, which will make it even harder to fall asleep without them. It's a vicious cycle. What I would suggest is using natural sleep aids, like melatonin and valerian root. I have used both before (as well as other things like ambien), and while they're not as strong, they are NOT habit-forming.

I also always sleep with ear plugs in. I play something in the background, such as white noise or ocean waves. Here are some links:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KaOrSuWZeM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1QQajfobPw

Also, a good idea is to start working out intensively in the evening. Such as around 5pm. Like 45 mins of cardio, and a lot of strength conditioning/weight-lifting. This will legitimately physically exhaust your muscles, which signals your brain that they NEED to rest. Whenever I work out in the afternoon I tend to sleep like a baby!

There's also meditation, which I practice 5x/week. Now if you're open to learning how to meditate, just drop a question in my inbox. I could literally write a novel on it right now, but only if you are interested!! It is a great way to relax & calm your mind which makes it easier to fall asleep.

I hope you find some ease falling asleep. As a fellow insomniac, I know what you are going through. The exercise is really the best bet.
Let me know if any of the above work for you, or if you are interested in learning about meditation!
Goodluck:) xx

I have naturally pin straight thinish red hair with lots of layers and ends just above the middle of my back. It's more of a strawberry blonde/brownish indoors but outdoors in the sun it's like blazing orange. I dyed it an auburn color using henna hair dye from Lush a few months ago.
My roots have grown out a lot so I plan on re-dying my hair again with the left over henna I have.
I've been wanting to get highlights in my hair for awhile and I plan on getting it done professionally. I wanted something subtle but not so subtle that nobody with notice. I was thinking like a golden honey color, maybe? I've never gotten my hair highlights before or professionally colored. I'm really anal about that and having my hair get damaged so I have no idea what I'm supposed to ask for. Does anybody have any suggestions?
How long should I wait after using the henna to go and get this done?
Also, I have side bangs. I'm not getting any part of my hair cut when I get this done. Should I get highlights on my bangs, too? It's a pretty big bang, it covers my entire forehead.

http://tinypic.com/r/33l042h/6
^That's a picture of my hair outdoors after I dyed it auburn. It's a little faded by now. But once I re-dye it I'm assuming it'll be a bit darker than that.

From the pic, (you have really pretty hair!), I think honey-highlights would look GORGEOUS! It would be a great great summer look.

If you were to color your hair, you should protect it when your outside. Otherwise the sun may change it for the worse. There are a bunch of "hair sunscreens" online that I would suggest you invest in. This one:
http://www.amazon.com/Pureology-Anti-Fade-Complex-Color-Defense/dp/B002RT7262/ref=sr_1_3?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1336749326&sr=1-3
^^This one is good because it is specifically for colored hair.

In terms of your side bangs, I would get those lightly highlighted to. Otherwise, your hair would look uneven, and you could tell it was dyed. The ideal situation is that if someone just met you for the first time, you don't want them to think you have a "cheap job" or that your hair coloring is uneven.

Send me an after pic! I would love to see how your coloring turns out:)
Enjoy your summer locks! xx

My english teacher assigned us each different mysteries to do some research on. I got head shrinking. i asked my grandma if she knew anything about it and she said that when she was young and worked at a photo processing company and that someone that worked with her had a shrunken head. She said that the woman took a trip to Africa and was kidnapped and a tribe shrunk her head. Is this possible. If so could she really have lived through such a thing??

If your head gets shrunk, you are not alive. 0% chance of survival. Either this story is inaccurate/made-up or something else happened to her, like some wierd voodoo on her head but not actual "shrunken head" procedures.

But that's a cool topic! I bet your assignment will be great.
Goodluck researching:) xx

Hi! I have this under stair room that can be accessed by a small opening in a closet. Any Ideas? Besides storage? I kinda want it to be a little hideout, and the ceilings about 4 ft high, but i think it'll be cozy.

CRAFT CLOSET!!! Oh my goodness I have a pinterest board dedicated to this little craft closet I hope to have when I finally get my own house! You can have all sorts of things in there, like ribbons, cards, buttons, supplies like scisscors + tapes, lace, sewing. I have a "craft box" for now, and it's got some nice tissue papers, cards, stickers, little lindt chocolates, ribbon, bubblewrap, and little gifts like jewelry.
I would highly suggest that! I am jealous!
Let me know what you end up doing with that space! I really am curious. If you do end up making a craft corner, please send me a pic! Not even joking haha. I would love to compare it to what I've got on my pinterest!

Okay, well i'm at that age where i need to decide what i'm doing for life. i've changed my mind so many times but the one thing i keep coming back to is beauty. i am soo fascinated with it and people ask me to do their hair and makeup for special events and just because! people love my work especially my friends. i've done events such as senior portrait photoshoots, homecoming, prom, etc.
right now i am currently 17 years old and i am just finishing my junior year of high school. I will be applying to colleges in october or november. i don't know what to do though.. i come from a VERY wealthy family and they run a dental business and my parents want to see me as successful as them so their pushing me to go to college to become a dr or PA but i really want to do beauty. They tell me that hair stylists/ make up artists earn 20,000 a year which can barely cover plumbing, water bills, cell phone bills, heat etc. i feel like their exaggerating a bit but they could be right?
all i want to do is be happy. and i know, i know that if i end up going to beauty school i would be SO happy!!!!!! :) it make smile thinking about it, but what also makes me sad is thinking i'm selfish because if i do end up going to beauty school and becoming a hairstylist/ makeupartist, i wouldn't give my future children the life i had growing up.. i had everything. i currently live in a huge mansion not to exaggerate (my parents are very materialistic and showy people).
i feel like all i want to do is make myself happy and i'm scared that right now i believe becoming a beautician would make me happy but what if in the future when i see my kids wanting things i can't afford would make me UNHAPPY. someone please help me:( i'm absolutely going crazy.
my dad gave me the idea to get a dental hygienist license and work for him (family business), that way i could never get fired and make $50 an hour...... he says teeth are beauty related somewhat and i think thats not so bad of an idea, but could i still go to beauty school being a hygienist?
somebody just help me, i am SO confused and lost....

I am actually a Pre-Dental student, so I know a bit about the dental hygienist system...It will take about 2-3 years of schooling to be a hygienist. Now I don't know about beauty school, but I have heard it is around one year. I don't know how accurate this is, but for the most part, I would say you need about half the time for beauty school than the dental hygienist program.

So, think about what you would rather do with your life. You could always start out doing beauty school, work in a salon for a bit and get settled with your life as an adult, and then go do the dental program when you are around 20 years old. This is just a suggestion/my opinion. The reverse (dental than beauty school) doesn't seem like as good as a route.

Where would you rather see yourself iwhen you are 30 - a beauty salon or a dentist's office?
What about when you're 40, where can you picture yourself then?

Think deeply about these 2 questions^^, and feel free to ask me anything else on your decision process - such as anything else about dental offices etc.
Good luck:) xx
