People, to one degree or another, like to talk about themselves and their interests and such. Not in a conceited, "it's all about me" kind of way, just general thoughts.
I would suggest anything that would encourage that, which will also help you to get to know the person better. It's easier if situational, but you can just randomly throw out the questions, too.
What do you like to do? Ahhh, fishing. What kind of fishing, ocean or fresh water? Do you have a certain type of fish that you like to catch? Stuff like that.
What do you like to do in your spare time? Motorcycle enduro, wow, tell me more about that?
What kind of music do you like? Ah, old school rock. What are your favorite bands? Favorite songs?
You don't mention age, but I assume that you're in school. If the same school, maybe something like favorite teacher, best subject, the endless student assembly or other common events that were either good or bad and might spark conversation, etc.
