Running causing spider veins??

Question Posted Sunday May 13 2012, 7:48 pm

24/f
Okay, I'm an avid runner. I used to run in Asics, but I fell in love with Vibrams Five Fingers shoes and haven't switched back. Since I got them and worked up to being able to run in them, I've noticed a definite increase in strength, muscle-cuts, and general ability in my legs. That being said, I'm only up to running about 2 miles every other day. I try to be healthy, but I often find myself burning more calories than I'm consuming. I don't know if that has anything to do with... uh, anything.
But onto my actual question.
On the outside of my calves (both of them now, actually), I have a few spider veins... they're very thin, very small, and very close to the surface of my skin, it appears. I had a couple before I switched shoes, but now I have more, and they're on both legs. :(
Could my running be causing these? Is there any way to reverse them once they've appeared? Are they something to be concerned about, or are they really just cosmetic? My legs are just getting as cut as they should be, and now I want to hide them! Argh!
Thanks to everyone who answers. <3

Hi, I'm an avid runner as well. If you are burning more calories than you're consuming, that means you're losing weight, even if it's at the slow rate of 1-2 lb/week. I think this could lead to seeing the veins more, because there is less skin between the bone and surface, so they will "bulge out". Running paired with a healthy diet would actually diminish the appearance of veins, because it will improve your circulation. If it looks like they're "popping out," maybe you should up the calories just a bit on the days you run, otherwise they'll "bulge" in a hypertension-y way!
