Ok, I have two questions about college. One, can you do anything with a minor? If not, then what is the purpose?

Two: If you pledge a sorority and are accepted, then does that mean you HAVE to live in its house??

a minor in college is your second concentration that either gives your major focus (ie. business major with an art minor would be a good person to own a gallery) or is a second area you're interested in in a lesser way from your major that you still want to study in-depth (math major with a minor in dance). you usually need fewer credits for a minor than you would with your major. whether or not you do anything depends on yourself.

as for sororities, if you pledge and are accepted and have a high enough GPA and there's room in the house, you will be pulled in. in some schools, you have to go through a semester or a year of living in the dorms before you can be in a sorority house and some sororities have different national rules about living in the houses. local sororities that don't have houses won't pull you in, of course, because you wouldn't have a place to be pulled into. and sororities unaffilliated with the pan-hellenic council (those that don't have panhel charters) may also have more leniency. honestly, though, living in the house is one of the best things about being in a sorority. no boys, good rooms, choice of roommate, etc. the benefits far outweigh the inconveniences.

okay so for some reason this year, a majority of the people in my grade are becoming vegetarians. its really akward. 4 of my friends have become vegitarian recently, and ive heard about other people at my school doing it to. i dont have anything against vegetarians or vegans, its just that i dont see why everybodys doing it. it also seems like my friends are changing so much because of this. arrgg, what do i do and why do you think they are doing this?

there are a few big reasons for this happening at your school. the two below me are good ones, but it's also incredibly trendy right now. I've been a vegan for over a year now and when I first started out very few vegan friends took me seriously because it was the trendy thing to do at the time. It took maybe four months to get full acceptance from the group because most people did it to be cool.

I have wanted a green iPod nano [second generation] since they first came out. The iPod I have now, it's approaching the end of its life and I really need a replacement.

Now, of course, they're discontinued. I'm having a hard time finding a green nano in any store, so I'm thinking of buying a used one off the Apple website, for $99, and getting a case for it.

What is the condition of a refurbished iPod? Are they the iPods kids used as hockey pucks or are they in pretty decent shape? I don't want one with scratches. Plus, I haven't checked at WalMart yet so I could still get lucky & find a new one. What should I do?

well.

I never bought a refurbished iPod, but the iBook I'm typing this on right now was refurbished. It came to me in perfect condition and has been running a solid three years with one minor problem last februaryish. I encourage buying refurbished apple products.

I've been buying heels lately and trying to break them in but I just hate it. When I wear them out I always end up bloody-heeled. It always skins the back of my foot and I have to take them off. I try to wear band-aids with them but they always slide off. Its inevitable... I always get my heels cut up! I step on the backs of the shoes to make them softer but still... OUCH!!

Any tips??

Generally, the more expensive the shoe the more comfortable it will be. Never buy a shoe that is too small and never complain if you're wearing heels when you could be wearing comfortable flats. It annoys the rest of us and spreads the notion that heels are not comfortable and they actually are. If your shoes are a titch too small or huge a half-size up then wearing too small shoes around you house for a week with the thickest pair of socks you can possibly find. They'll stretch out a tiny bit and then you should be fine.

for those of you who suffer with moderate-severe acne, do you or did you ever drink a lot of milk?

im curious because there is a study going on trying to prove that milk is linked to bad acne.
i drink a lot of milk and my acne is really bad.

I drink no milk nor do I eat any dairy. I have no acne problems caused from food. My acne is mostly caused by my own laziness about washing my face and the fact that I'm doing a show right now and wear a lot of make-up every night. you might want to try changing up your diet to fix your acne. It works for most people. And also, it's a whole lot easier to get enough calcium from broccoli and spinach and whatnot than it is to get it from milk. Milk also makes you fat just like it's meant to make baby cows fat.

I know this isn't really asking for advice, but the last few days I was just thinking about this and wondering why the people here joined.

I guess it is just out of pure curiosity. I would have just posted this in the moderator forum or in the supporter discussion, but I'd rather see why everyone joined rather than just those who have been here for some time and such.

So, why did you join advicenators and why are you still here? What about the site made you want to stay?

I'll probably be one of the first people to answer this (I'm not going to answer it in the question).

i hate my mom we do not get along at all. ill be 18 in a few weeks i need to get out of the house. i was wondering if there are different not shelters but places u could stay that are eitehr free or not to expensive please answer the question instead of saying oh just try and get along and shittttt thankss

Your best bet is to see if you have any friends who are older with couches or extra beds. I moved out at 18 and in with two of my older brother's friends (who I also know). It was expensive, but it was a lot better than living at home for the month I spent with them. I'm back at home now (and have been for two weeks), but I'm moving out on Wednesday afternoon to Missouri for college. There's really nothing besides shelters if you don't have friends or relatives (hopefully better than your mother) you can stay with. In the meantime if you can't find anything before you go to college, try and spend as much time as possible outside the house. Jobs are good, activities are even better. If you need any advice about moving out, drop a message in my inbox. I did it. I'm doing it again and next December/May I'll be moving yet again temporarily/permanently (hopefully).

I always get dry skin after using my acne perscription medicine, so i want to get a moisturizer for after using it! My face is oily, so i really don't want oil on my face! I tried using some moisturizer from Aveeno that was supposed to be oil free and natural, but my face was 2x as oily as normal and i felt gross. So i washed it off, then my face became dry again! WHAT TO DO??? Thanks in advance!!!

If you have a prescription for your acne medication, then you need to talk to your dermatologist/doctor about what moisturizers to use. if it's an over-the-counter acne system, then there should be a moisturizer marketed with it. if there isn't then you might want to consider changing brands. consistency is the best weapon against acne. if you really don't want to switch brands, try to find a moisturizer marketed towards acne sufferers. my favorite is aveda's outer peace moisturizer. it's not too drying or oily and it has medication in it to help fight acne.

okay. so i have a physical on tuesday, tomorrow. and i smoked pot on friday and saturday day nights. and i have know effing clue waht to do. cause they will like make me pee in a cup right? oh btw im 14 and a girl. im not a pothead. it was only my second and third time.. but neways please help i have no clue what to do. my friend is telling me to drink bleach cause it\'ll clear my system but im scared! pleaseeeeeeeeee please please help :[
but im not going to drink bleach cause thats poisen and i dont want to die. my other friend said to drink tons of water and cranberry juice? will that help? i hope i have been. please if you have any ideas for me that will help clear all this stuff out of meeeeeeeee! please help :/

cranberry juice and water will flush out your system quickly. it may not take away all traces of marijuana. in some people, niacin tablets will mask the pot traces in urine. they're completely legal and easy to obtain from any health food store. however, if this was your first time (or your first time smoking in a while) you may be in the clear already. just in case, eating poppy seeds gives a similar result in a drug test to smoking marijuana.

my skin always feels itchy and dry and stuff and i use organic bodywash and things and i cant use lotion or i will break out my skin jsut feels all gross what can i do

if your skin is dry enough, you will actually break out worse. play around and find a lotion that works for you and use it consistently. also, if you're using an oil-based bar soap, it could also be a source of itchiness.

can you call hair blonde or blond
and is someone blond or blonde?

the word comes from french. in french, blond refers to male hair and blonde refers to female hair. in english, hair is neither male or female. both words work for either and generally someone chooses one for both since english does not have as strict rules about gender.

Okay, so I'm 15/f
Do NOT worry. I'm not planning to get sexually active any time soon so don't lecture me.

But anyways, I was on this site and I came across and topic posted up by someone saying that birth controls weren't veg/vegan suitable because they use animal stuff in there.

Well, what exactly ARE birth controls made from??

as far as I know, the only vegan birth control method (that I've heard of) is the vegan condom under the brand condomi. regular condoms use sodium caseinate to clarify the latex. condomi condoms work exactly the same and are as safe as any others. there's a chapter in the book Vegan Freak: Being Vegan in a Non-Vegan World that completely deals with the birth control issue.

Juices do have a lot of sugar, so I always buy the bottles that say 'No Sugar Added', but I read in a magazine that drinks are actually how a lot of people gain weight. For example, sodas, iced teas, lemonades, juices, etc. I like having apple juice & orange juice. I'm not sure what to do about the whole sugar thing. Would it be okay to have a cup or two of juice a day?? My throat is always dry between meals & I dislike having water all the time. Any suggestions?? Oh & I also drink milk regularly. Thanks!!

fruit juice once or twice a day is very good for you, especially if it's mostly water anyway. my big reason for answering this question is that you've been drinking milk. consider this, milk (and dairy, for that matter) is used to fatten up a baby cow. there's no other reason for its existence. It's probably not the best thing for you to be drinking "regularly". If you're worried about calcium, consider green vegetables like kale and broccoli and even soymilk.

the dr dignosed me with seborric dermatitis [sp]
and i cant stop picking my head and im ending up with bald spots what can i do?none of those shampoos that they have for that work so i use a natural kind its like "neem" shampoo & conditioner my hair is starting to thin and i dont know what to do i keep picking at the scab things.

I used to have seborric dermatitis, so I know what you're going through. I was 10 at the time and it was pretty much horrible to go through. Your biggest enemy is the source of your picking. When you notice you're doing it, check up on what you're doing at the same time. For me, it was a combination of not being challenged by school (which explained why all of my sores were on the left side of my head) and the stress of a public school environment. I just rode out the problems, though, and now I have hard scarring on my head. Had I enrolled in a more challenging, small-sized school I probably would have had the problem go away quicker.

The shampoo sucks, but you just have to get through it for the time being. There's also a really great tar-based topical medication that goes directly on the sores and forms a hard, but flexible shell around them to heal them if you leave it alone for a day or so. I believe it's called cyclocort. I got it from my dermatologist. I firmly suggest going to a dermatologist in combination with your doctor because he/she will be able to prescribe a more specific medication for your situation.

is there any shampoo/toothpaste/soap without sodium laurel sulfate or any of the sodium sulfates?please help thanks!

for toothpaste: tom's of maine, desert rose
shampoo: aveda, nature's gate, lush, kiss my face, almost any organic shampoo
soap: lush, kiss my face, tom's of maine, aveda, all organics.

my suggestion is to go to a wild oats or whole foods if you've got them in your area and scout out the natural beauty products aisle. always read labels as well.

I'm 14 and I have high cholesterol. I know it's sad, but I can't really decide what I eat. My parents buy the food. I'm jogging daily though. I'm just afraid I will die in my twenties. Plus high cholesterol runs in my family. My mom has it and does he parents. I really got it by genetics, but then with the food I eat it doesnt work all that great. What cna I do since I don't buy the food for the house. I don't want to die in my twenties.

first off, don't listen to the girl below me. this is very much something to worry about. at 14, you should not have high cholesterol. the human body is not designed to survive with high cholesterol. your second step is to research your problem. figure out why people get high cholesterol and why you got yours. it's most likely not just genetics alone. if that were the case, I'd have high cholesterol and I don't. I have really really low cholesterol levels based on my diet choices. third, figure out what you need to change. you might be able to figure it out on your own in your research or you may have to visit a dietitian or doctor. I strongly suggest a nutritionist. you need support from your parents, so tell them how strongly you feel about your problem (and theirs, as it sounds). go shopping with them and change your family's lifestyle. if you can't get them on board immediately, then make sure you go shopping with them for your own snacks and sneak a healthier lifestyle into theirs.

most importantly, do not give up.

SO i'm in a play in this little theater. It's snow white and i'm the evil witch. Also i'm 13. My mom said something to me yesterday that got me thinking. She said "you never know if talent scouts are watching you , i hear the come to little places like that, so try your best". So I started wondering, what is that "thing" or "things" that make a talent scout go up to someone and tell them they have the potential to be professional? It can't just be that you are a good actress/ actor cause alot of kids I seen are and no talent scout contacted them. So what is it? If you aren't involved in acting can you please not answer this? Thanks.

the big key is listening and not chit-chatting with your friends throughout the rehearsal process. pay attention to your director even when he/she is not talking to you. don't talk back either. the more well-behaved kids get parts in real theater because adults don't want to deal with behavior problems who look good on stage.

My school needs a yearbook theme. Any ideas? (with things we could include to make the theme)

the best themes I've ever seen for yearbooks that I own are my junior year theater yearbook and my senior year comic book-themed yearbook.

Yesterday I went up to the college I'll be starting in the fall. I registered for my classes and what not. There were other freshman there too. No one knew each other, but by the end of the day they were all talking with one another. I didn't say a word all day. No one said anything to me. I'm not saying it's all their fault. I should have spoken up and joined in the coversation, but I'm too scared I guess. I'd love to go up and start a conversation with someone, but I'm always worried they'll just look at me weird and wonder why I'm talking to them.

I'm not exactly shy, I'm just never the one to start a conversation, you know? I don't know where to start or what to talk about. On the other hand, if someone approached me, I'd talk with them no problem. So how can I fix this? I'm worried that if I wait for people to come to me I won't meet anyone. The whole reason I wanted to go away to college was so I could meet new people, but it's harder than I thought I guess.

Suggestions?

I have the same sort of problem as you. At my registration, however, I was lucky enough to initially make friends with this girl Jessey (who I'll actually be rooming with next year). She's a whole lot more outgoing than I am, so I managed to meet a lot more people than I thought I would going in to registration. I think that if I hadn't talked to her early on I wouldn't have talked to anyone all day. That's how I am around most strangers.

Luckily what my story shows is that no matter what, someone will always talk to you because they are intensely outgoing. Make sure that the next time you're in the college situation, you look open to talk to people. When you go to college, I also suggest you buy the game Apples to Apples. It's a really popular game among poor college students because the variations on it are infinite. It's also easy to play and definitely a good way to make friends and start conversation without alcohol. You will meet people and you will have a good college experience. That's just how it works.
