Advicenators discussion: I'm loving having a place to rant. Razhie wrote Monday January 15 2007, 4:13 pm: Lately I have become rather good at holding my tongue when it comes to the parent bashing that seems to be in vogue lately. No doubt there are some lousy ones out there but it really bugs me when I hear it implied that a parent can’t have both a great career and a great family, or all of a teen’s stupid behavior can be excused by an exasperated cry of “But where were their parents?”
Both of my parents worked full time my whole life, are highly educated and very busy executives. I had a nanny until I was thirteen, then I was a latchkey kid, and I think turned out okay!
My mom is still my best friend and I could call my Dad no matter what stupid scrap of trouble I found myself in. Both my parents stayed in touch with my life and I didn't get away with much more then anyone else around me. When I got caught, man was I in trouble, and I am one of EIGHT siblings! Most of whom turned out okay despite the fifty hour work week our parents often put in. Those of my siblings who have had, or are having, some difficulty with drugs or sex or school, wouldn’t blame it on our parents; they would have some balls and say “Yeah! I made a hell of a mistake.”
I’m sick of poor parenting being an excuse for a teen’s poor behavior, and I just wanted to share because this myth that you can’t be successful at work and be a good parent is just that, a myth. I hope I’m living proof of it, and I really really wish people would stop being so quick to scapegoat the parents these days and place at least a bit of the responsibly with the teens, who have all the correct information at their fingertips if they would only be sensible about it instead of believing unreasonable and illogical things.
Stop selling the young teens in our world short. They aren’t idiots! They will tell you that themselves! Expect them to behave that way.
Rant Off.
