Advicenators discussion: New P2P guide

theymos wrote Tuesday September 11 2007, 7:50 pm:
Peer-to-Peer(P2P) is a way to download files. Often the files you can download are illegal. Anything that you would normally have to buy, but get for free on a P2P network is illegal. You will probably not get caught for just downloading files. Most P2P clients are configured so that you automatically share downloaded files, you will eventually get caught for that.

On all P2P networks, some random person is providing you with the file you're downloading. There are no guarantees of its quality or authenticity.

There are a number of P2P networks, and each network has a few clients(the program you download). All clients for a particular network can download *all* the same files other clients for that network can, and at a similar speed.

If you use P2P very often, you should completely disable your firewall. Firewalls slow down you internet connection and computer when you're using P2P, and don't offer very much protection. If you have a router, it needs to be configured to use P2P(if you don't configure it, your router can be ruined and your internet connection can "freeze"); contact me for more info.

Here are the most known P2P networks, from largest(most users) to smallest, with their strengths and weaknesses, and the best clients for them.

--Multi-network clients--
Before I begin I want to cover multi-network clients. Multi-network clients work on more than one network.
-Shareaza, which works on G1, G2, and eDonkey, with limited bittorrent support [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
-KCeasy, which works on openFT, G1, Ares, FastTrack(doesn't seem to be working), and eDonkey(alpha) [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

--Bittorrent--
*Strengths:Extremely fast, less chance of getting caught, you can download multiple files at once.
*Weaknesses:Only popular files are available, not good for small files, it depends too much on trackers, you have to use an external search engine.
*Recommended clients:
-Azureus classic [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
-Vuze(new Azureus) [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
-uTorrent [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
-Halite [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
*Other clients: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
*Search engines:
-btjunkie metasearch [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
-The pirate bay tracker [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
-Mininova metasearch and tracker(no adult content) [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
*My guide: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

--eDonkey--
*Strengths: Many files, fast searches, largest network.
*Weaknesses: Slow downloads, many fake and mis-named files, completely relies on search servers.
*Recommended clients:
-Emule [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
*Other clients: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

--Gnutella 1--
*Strengths: Many files.
*Weaknesses: Full of malware, searches are slow.
*Recommended clients:
-Frostwire(based on limewire pro) [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
-Limewire(contains ads) [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
*Other clients: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

--Gnutella 2--
*Strengths: Faster downloads and searches than G1, files are more reliable, file ratings.
*Weaknesses: Less files.
*Recommended clients:
-Shareaza [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
*Other clients: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

--Ares--
*Strengths: Fast searches, works behind firewalls, files are usually quality.
*Weaknesses: Extremely slow downloads.
*Recommended clients:
-Ares Galaxy [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
*Other clients: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

--FastTrack--
*Strengths: Oldest network with the most files.
*Weaknesses: All known clients are bundled with adware and spyware, the network itself is full of malware, and you're most likely to get caught on the FastTrack network.
*I do not recommend you use the FastTrack network.
*Clients: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

--DirectConnect--
*Strengths: Fast search and downloads.
*Weaknesses: The network is broken into individual servers, which are vulnerable.
*Recommended clients:
-DC++ [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
*Other cilents: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

--openFT--
*Strengths: Fast downloads, reliable.
*Weaknesses: Few files.
*Recommended clients:
-KCeasy(multinetwork) [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
*Other client:
-Just one other, [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) . It's in Portuguese, I have no idea what their site says.

--OFF--
*Strengths: Reasonable download speed, the nature of the system protects you from getting caught.
*Weaknesses: Very few files, the only program is buggy.
*Client:
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
*There are no other clients.

I personally use Shareaza(with G1 disabled), KCeasy, and Azureus. That covers all of the major networks.

Networks I didn't cover:
-GNUnet (buggy)
-NodeZilla (too undocumented)
-MUTE (buggy)
-Freenet (F2F*)
-Entropy (F2F*)
-WASTE (F2F*)
-Usenet (you have to pay)
-Ants P2P (buggy)
-RShare (too undocumented)
-Winny (too undocumented)

(* F2F(friend to friend) is a peer-to-peer network created between people who know each other. While they can become very large and useful, they're too hard to use for me to include here)

--NodeZilla--
*Strengths: Completely anonymous, reasonable amount of files
*Weaknesses: Takes a very long time to get warmed up, very slow
*Client: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
*There are no other clients
*This network is closed-source

Shareaza.com has been taken over by a malware website. Don't go there. Use this link instead:

--MANOLITO (aka blubster)--
*Strengths: Somewhat obscure, I'm told the downloads are fast
*Weaknesses: It uses a lot of network resources, and the protocol is closed.
*Recommended clients:
-Piolet: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
*Other clients: Blubster: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
