Advicenators discussion: Advicenators tips - How to keep your question from being rated down.

As you may or may not know, all moderators have the ability to rate the questions that are asked. The ratings are 1, 2, and 3.

If a question receives at least 5 ratings with an average rating of 1, that question gets deleted.

If a question receives an averaging rating of 3, that question is eligible for Featured Question. To be a Featured Question, a question should be well-formed, with good capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. For instance, something you wouldn't be surprised to see in a Dear Abby column.

Now, I can only speak for myself here, and my way of rating questions, but here are some tips to get a higher rating on the questions you ask.

...

Use proper capitalization. My personal pet peeve in this category is lowercased i. As in "i need help." When I see lowercased i's in a question I frequently give a lower rating. Something I would have given a 3, gets a 2. Also, the first letter in a sentence should be capitalized.

Don't use "trendy" things like && or double-i's, or capItalIzing thIngs whIch normally wouldn't be capItalIzed, etc... Those will also lower the rating.

Don't use chat abbreviations like "ur" and "wut". This isn't live chat, your questions are archived posts. Let's not cause the people who find these questions in Google to think that this site is full of 5 year olds. If you are 13+ (which you have to be to register here) you can type normally. We want to give a good impression, to encourage people to stay and give advice, not chase them away.

I don't expect everybody to spell perfectly, but at least make an effort. Misspellings will happen, typos will happen, but... wen u talk lik dis i no ur nt even tryin.

Try to avoid EXCESSIVE ALL CAPS and exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you say "I'll rate all 5's for anything!" or "I rate high", your question will be deleted. You should only be rating 5's for really awesome answers. And by the same token, 1's should be for horrible, can't get worse, abusive, I want this person banned, type of answers... NOT for answers that do answer your question, do give an honest opinion, but just weren't what you were wanting to hear. Most answers should fall in the 2-4 rating category on average.

Don't ask questions already asked a million times, or whose answers can easily be found on Google.

If you have already searched Advicenators:

And already searched Google:

...then in your questions, you can say something like "I tried using the Advicenators search and google search, but couldn't find anything that helped with my particular problem." Do NOT say something like "And don't tell me to Google it!" Asking for advice and then saying "Don't tell me *something*!" is very abrasive, and automatically rubs people the wrong way. If you don't want to hear certain advice, there are better ways to say that.

If I think of any more, I'll add them later. ;-)
