Advicenators discussion: Losing Weight

ductape_n_roses wrote Saturday August 4 2007, 11:16 am:
Weight Loss:

First things you need to know are that you need to eat healthy, exercise regularly, and set realistic goals. I've read outrageous questions on here such as "How do I lose a 100lbs in a month?" or "If I just drink water and fast for a long time, would I lose weight?" or "I need to lose weight, FAST, and still be able to snack on junk food."

Sorry to break your hearts but you should only lose 1 to 1.5 lbs per week. Fasting is unhealthy and has horrible effects on your body. You cannot lose weight FAST because you'll just regain it FASTER. And snacking on junk food is unhealthy, empty calories, and will not fit into a losing weight program much.

It's going to be a combination of exercise, eating healthy, and setting REALISTIC goals that will help in the aid of losing weight.

Let's talk about setting goals:
Again, the healthy amount is to lose about 1 to 1.5 lbs every week. No more than that. So don't give yourself 4 weeks to lose 30lbs. That's ridiculous.

Don't think that fasting or severely restricting your caloric intake will help you. If will make your body hold onto your fat [aka go into starvation mode] & you'll be resulting in binging, gaining all the weight, if not more, faster, and you might do serious harm to your body.

Now, let's talk about calories:
All food has calories. You can't avoid that. But you can avoid eating those empty calories that are unhealthy for the body and fattening by choosing healthy foods, which usually have lower calories, and fills you up.

It takes your body 3500 caloric intake to gain a pound. Whereas to lose a pound...you got it. You need to burn 3500 calories. Such a huge, impossible amount, right? WRONG. You're body burns calories for everything you do, even when you're sleeping. When you blink, read, type, sit, yawn, eat...you're continuously burning calories. But the amount of calories burned from person to person is different. So let's get your BMR [Basal Metabolic Rate] from this lovely site: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) Calculator

So, that's how much your body burns everyday. But, you cancel it out by eating. [I know, party pooper.] So you think "Hmmm, if I don't eat..." Well, if you don't eat, you're stupid because you're body will go into starvation mode and start storing fat. So why the hell did I go on this rant about BMR and calories? Continue down...

Say Bobby Pie has a BMR of 2300. And he eats 2300 calories everyday and no more. Then he will maintain his current weight. But, if he adds 500 calories to his BMR and eats 2800 calories for a week, than he will GAIN a pound at the end of the week [500 extra calories x 7 = 3500. Now, remember what I told you about gaining a pound? You need 3500 calories to gain a pound O.x Coincidence?] Now, if Bobby Pie eats 500 calories less than his BMR and eats 1800 calories every day for a week, he will lose a pound. See where I'm going with this? 500 calories x 7 = 3500!!!

So what you need to do is eat 500 calories less than your BMR and you will lose a pound a week. It may not seem significant, but hey, you're losing a pound, right? That's something...

Then we come to FOOD:
If you are dedicated to losing weight, you will limit or avoid yourself form junk food, empty calories, sweets, sodas, etc. They don't fill you up, they just make you fat, they kill your plans, they make you unhealthy, and will cause bad skin.

So what the hell are you suppose to eat? Real food. Veggies, fruits, lean meat, beans, whole grains, wheat bread, etc, etc. Doesn't sound very delicious...I know. But who says that veggies have to be boring? Cook them up in fun, healthy ways. Don't drench stuff in sugar or oil, though, because, well, that's just canceling out the benefits. Trust me, there are lots of food out there that taste better than sweets and junk food. If you need recipes, go to [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) Recipes Site to get recipes. I think I'm in love with that site. As for the drinks, H20 and tea is your best choice. Milk occasionally, okay. Sports drinks, sodas, diet sodas, juices, etc...SUGAR LOADED! And not healthy.

Make sure you keep count of calories of the foods you eat. It seems like a hassle, but it isn't. You just look at the food package and OMG. There's the nutrition guide...and *gasp* the calories. If you don't know the calories, don't guestimate. Use [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) lovely technology to find calories in a food and/or keep track of how much calories you've eaten online...for free.

Okay, so I've done my share about eating and calories and what not. Seems easy, right? Well, sure, you can lose weight by eating only a certain amount of calories. But exercise, when included, is much better =D I know, you dread to exercise but I promise you a Boca Vegan patty and Apple Pie Larabar that exercise will definitely help tone you up.

Exercise is good for you and makes you healthy and helps you get those A's in gym. Try and walk/jog/run 3 times a day, if not 5 or 7. Start off slow if you're going to jog or run or you'll seriously regret it the next morning. Stretch and warm up very well, too.

E.g: Betty Crocker decides that she's going to start running out of the blues. She does her stretches, not much warm up, and starts off jogging quickly on her first day. She runs about half a mile and she's completely out of breath and breathing like wheezing donkey. She starts to walk, comes home, and feel "accomplished". The next day, she can barely walk because her legs and thighs are so freakishly sore. This continues for a week and puts a complete halt to her exercising.

Get my point? Start with stretches and warm ups. Don't go fast, start slow and GRADUALLY increase your speed over a LONG period of time. Along with that, do some toning exercises 3 to 5 to 7 times a week. Which ever you prefer. If you want to see how much calories you burned, go to this nifty site [once more] and search for the calories you've burned by picking an activity.[Link](Mouse over link to see full location) Site

Weighing yourself:
When should you weigh yourself? How often?
You should weigh yourself ONCE a week. Preferably at the same day every week [e.g weigh yourself every Monday or every Tuesday, etc] Weigh yourself in the morning right after you wake up and before you consume any food or drinks. [Weighing yourself at this time of the day is the most accurate, seeing that food and drinks can increase your normal weight by 5-10lbs!].

Run through:
Eat 500 less than your BMR
Eat & drink healthy foods only.
Limit/Cut out junk food, sugars, and sweets.
Make exercising a habit and routine, even if it's only 10min. Every bit counts.
Weigh yourself only once a week on the same day of the week in the morning.
Set realistic goals!

Trouble shooting:
I don't know what exercises to do...
*I'm nice enough to have included a list of exercises in another topic. Go look.

I'm not losing anymore weight!!!
*Your BMR might have changed. Calculate it again with your current status and continue from there.

I don't want to lose anymore weight!!!
*Didn't you read Bobby Pie's example? Eat the same amount of calories as your BMR.

I gained back all the weight!
*Did you pig out? Did you cheat? Did you stop exercising? GET BACK ON TRACK.

I don't want to lose any weight!
*Why the hell did you even read this?

Someone pointed out that the links don't work =/
So, I'm not a computer smarts genius. Haha, get over it =P

[Link](Mouse over link to see full location) is the first link for the BMR

[Link](Mouse over link to see full location) is the second link for the recipes

[Link](Mouse over link to see full location) is the third and fourth link for the site that gives you calories for many foods and find how much calories you burned doing what activity. You can also create an account on there to keep track of it daily! =)

I love the topic. It's very helpful! Actually, more helpful than most things I've seen on this site. Haha, I'll have to try to work on eating um.. about less than 1272 calories a day, ahah, but thanks for posting this ;)
Btw, saw your info. MCR fan? Sweet. We need more of the real fans on here. I've seen/experienced in so many cases, where they saved people/myself :D. Part of the MCRmy street team? :)
ductape_n_roses wrote Sunday August 5 2007, 1:43 am:
I love MCR with all my life.
Saying "They saved my life" sounds cliche now that everyone says it. So yeah. But really, they continue to do so with their awesome music and talents and amazing msgs they give to their fans =) I can't say I'm a good fan. I think I'm a horrible MCR fan. I really do love them with all my life and I would take a bullet for them or more without any second thoughts. But yeah. I think I'm a pretty bad MCR fan. Mainly because my mom banned me from them [Lovely, right?] I have yet to see them and they're coming to VA on the 14th and 19th but I won't get to see them =( Very sad about that. Extremely sad. Grawr. Yeppers.
kittaytoro wrote Sunday August 5 2007, 3:52 pm:
Yea, I'm pretty much completly obsessed. Not in like, a complete fan girl way, more.. with facts about them, their message, their music, ect.
You should try MCRmy out! Definitely sounds like you'd fit in there :P
I wish I could go to a concert; but my parents dont really like them, and I can't ever really listen to them at my mom's house :-/
ductape_n_roses wrote Sunday August 5 2007, 6:57 pm:
Uhg. I can't do anything that I'm not suppose to for the time being. My computer died on me yesterday, thus not giving me enough security to visit a My chem site on my parents' computer =/
I'll definitely check them out when my computer gets fixed, hopefully without being crashed =X

What does bricking actually mean?
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Oh...well, though this isn't really an album, you forgot to mention their Life on the Murder Scene one!

I love Desert Song on there. And I think they could've tied it into TBP album.
ductape_n_roses wrote Sunday August 12 2007, 3:21 am:
Well, Blood is more like a hidden track. Like Dead Baby Kickball in the Dear Diary, My Teenage.... album by FFTL [Yeah, too lazy to type out the entire album name] Although Dead Baby Kickball isn't officially the hidden track's name. But I've seen that people refer to Blood as Kill All Your Friends.

Either way, I love them. Haha. I want to listen to Desert Song now. But I can't. Grawr.

Throwing bricks at people aren't nice. Maybe your shoes, but not bricks. They hurt. Haha.
ductape_n_roses wrote Monday August 13 2007, 3:00 pm:
Haha. Sarcasm is awesome.
I seriously kicked my shoe off at Alex twice though and I hit him right on the spot. haha.
But my shoe flings off at random times. I really should tighten the laces but, eh...I like it the way it is now.

To correct your list....
No quaking ducks.
No chicken wings.
No burgers [veg/vegan burgers yes. No non-veg/vegan burgers]
No fish sticks

BB guns hurt. haha
Mine disappeared 6 years ago XD
ductape_n_roses wrote Saturday August 18 2007, 1:32 am:
