In some beliefs even being able to see your own reflection in a mirror right after a death meant that either you or a family member would die next. I can't say this is why a mirror is covered if its any particular case you know of as I have read that practices although similar can vary in many ways depending on the type of buddhism for example that is followed and there are many.
But I can say it is most likely due to a myth and a fear of death. I know that some people with psychic powers claim to be able to see images of spirits of those passed on, or ghosts but I have not seen anything on the internet yet to tell me it is linked to the reason for covering mirrors right after a death.
