Salary Range Why would a company state a salary range if they don't intend to pay in the upper end of that range? I interviewed for a job recently. The stated salary range was $65k - $75k. They offered me $68k, which is only $1k above my current salary. I turned down the offer, but the HR Manager called and said they really liked me, and wanted to know what it would take to get me to come on board. I told her $72k. An hour later, I was told they were going to pursue other candidates. They didn't bother to make a counter offer.

All you can know for sure is that they weren't going to pay you in that range.
There could be dozens of reasons - some of the reasons might have nothing to do with you - but the most likely one was that they posted the range that that position is paid, with no intention of offering a new employee anything but the low range, and reserving the higher range for those who have been in the position for some time. ]
