I am obsessed with an old movie from the 80s. "The Last Starfighter" which they showed on tv last week. I loved it so much I stayed up until 3am when it was going to be on again! The last time I bought a dvd of an old movie like this it was very bad quality and had no extras except the trailer. Does anyone know if this is a good version they put on DVD and does it have enough special features to make it worth getting, or should I just stream it on Amazon when I need a fix?

They can only enhance older films so much from the original. It probably depends a lot on the particular movie itself. Just because an old movie that used to be in VCR tape form is now being put on DVD form doesnt mean its going to be a better quality.
I once saw a documentary on movies and how they are saved or preserved. There is a vault or perhaps several vaults where the originals of any movie ever made are archived. I would suppose that copies made from movies are going to be in whatever condition the archived version is. It was some time ago so I don't remember many details but conditions of the vaults are carefully controlled so that older films don't deteriorate and I believe that pretty much all the reel to reel old films have now a master copy in DVD version to save the film for generations into the future.
If you buy any DVD's make sure there is a return policy if you don't like the quality. Unless something went very wrong in the making of the copy you had, they're all going to be about the same quality. I can usually tell the decade of a movie by the style of dress and the quality of the film. Watching online is a good way to see any favorite older movies. Thats how I watch all my movies. We don't own a TV cus we don't watch anything else. [ Dragonflymagic's advice column | Ask Dragonflymagic A Question ]
