How do you make the usps hold mail?

Question Posted Tuesday March 4 2014, 10:14 pm

Soon we will be going away for almost a month and we don't want a pile of mail hanging around telling people we aren't at home. Is there a way to get the post office to stop delivering mail for a while?

Go to your local post office, the one from where your mail is delivered out of. Tell them you are going away on vacation. They will give you a card to fill out. On the card will be a space for you to fill in all the pertinent information such as you name and address and a box for the date you want your mail held or stopped. There will also be a date you want mail started on again.

Most likely the mail that built up while you were away will be held at the post office for you to come and pick up. Ask the postal clerk about this so you know if you have to go to the post office to pick up the mail they held while you were away.

You should fill out the stop card at least 5 days of leaving on vacation to allow processing.
