This not only adds extra protection to the 1% chance of pregnancy there is with most birth control pill. The condom also protects against the transmission of many STDS and the HIV/AIDS virus. While you don't ovulate just days before a period, which is needed for one to get pregnant, it doesn't hurt to take extra precautions, especially if a period hasn't started yet.
