What should happen next in my story??

Question Posted Wednesday June 19 2013, 6:14 am

My main character was hit trying to cross the street and has severe injuries. She finds out that her older sister was driving the car that hit her, her older sister was texting and driving. After her older sister hit her, a truck collided into the older sisters car and killed her. The teen main character is devastated and depressed. She will have casts on and won't b able to walk or move around a lot for 4 weeks. Her parents blame her sisters death on her. The thing is I don't know what will happen during the next four weeks, I've tried to brainstorm but nothing works. I'm having a bit of writers block lol. I would appreciate it if you could help me brainstorm some ideas.By the way the main character is a 14 going to be 15 year old girl

Some notes:
- after this 4 week period she begins to become extremely depressed and continues to have nightmares about the whole accident
-she starts to self harm
-she starts to go down the wrong path, she starts stealing cigarettes from her dead sisters drawer and is offered drugs from her friend at a party and starts to take them
-she distances herself
-she commits suicide

I can't say what happens after this because it would firstly be too long and I don't want to give too much away. Btw she can't start a love interest because that occors with someone else later in the book. I only need ideas for the 4 weeks. This may seem like your run of the mill teen angst drama but its going to be much more than that, email me if you want to hear the rest :) i really appreciate the help!

I'm not an expert author but I like your ideas so far. Btw, no one can really email you just using the information in your question you posted this anon. I unfortunately have experience with some of the issues your main character has with self harm. This story sounds very grim. During the 4 weeks it would be interesting for her to describe the nightmare in more detail to kill some time. Lets say during that period she has her first encounter with drugs and must return to the same hospital that her sister died in because of the crash, only she is there with her leg injuries as well as an OD and the nightmares progress...she swears off of drugs forever but encounters them and starts her habit again later in the book with a deadly mix of self harm and various hard drugs she uses to numb the pain of her sister that she misses dearly. Use imagery in things like flashbacks in her dreams while she's in the hospital recovering from her injuries and OD and let her remember being with her sister when she's much younger, that may lead her into more depression and self abuse, if that's what your going for. I honestly hope I helped and would love to hear the rest of the story email me @ letmebe44@gmail.com so I can her the rest if you're comfortable sharing. Luck writing and fair winds!

I do a bit of writer myself, mostly for the pleasure of writing. When I hit these road blocks as I call them I try taking the story in several different directions even if it changes how I might have written some other later chapter.

For instance: Her parents blame her. So during the next four weeks the parents are distant yet she is her their daughter and they care for her. After the casts come off they take her to physical therapy. While at physical therapy she meets the person her sister was texting at the time of the accident. You can then write about him/her being urged by the sister to come forward and inform her parents.

Another story line would be to have the driver of the truck show up at the funeral. He is young maybe a year of two older than her. He tells her that her sister blew a stop sign and he saw her working her cell phone just before impact that he doesn't think her sister even knew she hit her or saw him.

She urges him to tell her mother but he can't because of the law suit they have already filed against him. He tells her to be tough as it will all come out in the end and that he will be there for her. You could go on to write that she falls for him and end up rewriting the other portions of your book.

It is for reasons like this I try not to write ahead of myself for sometimes my storyline will change from the direction I thought it would go. I only write ahead if I think I have a brilliant idea and then try to write to that idea. Most of the time I end up changing or deleting my brilliant idea.

One thing that never changes is the enjoyment I get from the writing. As I said I write for the enjoyment and for something to occupy my time. I never intend to publish anything I write. That could change though I don't think so.
