Job interview help 18/f
I have an interview tomorrow at Staples. I have never done an interview before though. Google has really helped on looking at some of the questions they ask.
I'm unsure of what to wear. My dad goes to interviews quite a bit and he said just dress nice. He said I didn't have to go all professional with like white shirt, black skirt type of thing since I'm being interviewed for a retail job. Is this true?
Dressing nice is vague for me. He said I always dress nice so it shouldn't be a problem.
So I'm not sure what to wear and what not to wear. I don't wear t-shirts or anything really casual besides jeans so I'm clueless.
I've seen girls get jobs in jeans and a really cute shirt.
Anyways, what about what nail polish, shoes, or how your hair should be? I really want to put some effort in this.
Besides the how you look part, what else should I know about the interview. Some questions that are hard to answer? Things not to say?
Anything would be helpful. Thank you.

This is a tough question to answer as each interviewer looks at different things. If you have been to this store then you should know how the people wear their hair, makeup and do their nails. I would suggest that you go with minimal makeup, a nice subdued nail polish, nothing flashy and your hair fixed in a nice manner. If you have long hair a pony tail is always acceptable.
As a one time interviewer myself someone coming into my office in blue jeans, even though they may be acceptable dress once employed was a strike against the person.
What I looked for was someone who took the time to dress the best they could, which meant clean and neat, if blue jeans were all they had an they said so then they were acceptable. I would look for either slacks and a nice blouse. A skirt with a nice blouse or a dress for women. Nothing to tight or too short. If you wear a dress or skirt you should be able to sit down without having to pull at the hem of your dress to keep from exposing yourself to the interviewer. In short show the interviewer the respect they are do by inviting you in for and interview.
During the interview look the interviewer in the eyes when responding to questions, this is very important. Also do not wear a watch as we all have a tendency to check the time if we have one on. This is a big no - no. When asked a question if you need a moment or two to formulate your answer then take that moment. You do not need to start talking as soon as the interviewer stops talking.
To most questions there are not many right or wrong answers. In one interview I had, for which I was given the job. The owner did not ask me one question pertinent to the job I was applying for. He asked me questions about what I did in the military. When I was hired I asked him why? He responded that if I could make him understand how to repair an airplane then once he trained me on his product I could make his customers understand his products.
So as you dad said; dress nice which means neat and clean with respect for the person interviewing you. Look directly at the interviewer when answering a question. Don't be afraid to say you don't have an answer for a question as some interviewers will throw a question at you that you could not possibly know the answer to just to see if you will try to bluff your way through it.
I hope I have helped. ]
