Question Posted Monday May 6 2013, 3:09 pm

I asked my daughter what she meant by saying it was "cool" her mom was in jail and was taking orders or something. She said she was just joking around, I think that is OK, maybe she is just trying to lighten things up, What do you think? I I think that is OK to try to crack a joke to make the situation feel less bad and that a better way of handing the situation instead of being hysterical about it.

It's how most people cope with tough situations. When either one of my parents were incarcerated my big brother would crack jokes about it to make me and our younger siblings laugh. We were young and missed them. So her making slight jokes may be her way to keep calm and a sign that she misses her mother. It's also a learning experience for her to show her it doesn't matter how small the crime, you can still be put in jail for it.
