Cannot Get A Job

Question Posted Thursday April 11 2013, 8:52 pm

I am a 21 year old female that cannot get a job. I have applied for numerous jobs in the field that I have studied in, cooking and I never seem to get hired or called for interviews anymore. I live in a city with about 120,000 people where it's constantly winter... I have also applied to numerous other jobs that aren't within the field that I've studied such as being a clerk, gas pump attendant, waitress and acrobat, etc. Jokes about that last one but I still never seem to get hired ??? What am I doing wrong?! Since first not being able to get a job this year, I have been: aiming each resume to the particular job I am applying for, writing down the expirience I have aquired at my previous jobs that apply, getting my friends/family/resume builder to help suggest changes and I've been checking my resume from an employers persepective. Yet I still haven't got a full time job ? I've even applied for jobs in the next city which is an hour away. Would it be ok to just put all my experience on my resume rather than the actual places I've worked at? My resume has a cover letter then is only one page with all my info/work/exc and a page with three refrences. I do dress and act professional when I get an interview btw. But I'm now starting to stress out because my mom thinks I'm not trying to get a job since I've had no success so far, plus I'm starting to need a job to survive :/ I live on my own, off of my previous savings right now. Advice?

Hi,

I feel for you-and other people our age as it's harder than ever to get a job. It's hard-but it's not impossible. This is what I did to find my part time job.
1)When you apply, make sure you follow up your application with a phone call. Even if they say ' we've not processed the application yet', they'll remember your name-and that you're interested.
2)Get more work experience. I used to do 10 hours volunteering in the field in which I wanted to work in. Not only is this CURRENT work experience essential, you'll get amazing references to. So you want a job in cooking? Why not offer to volunteer cooking in a care home or for a charity? Sure, it's unpaid, but at least it looks like you're so into cooking you're prepared to do it in your spare time.
3)If you do go to interviews and do not get the job, make sure to push them for a reason why. This will be positive criticism to help you through future interviews.
4)Try not to focus to much on the job you want to do and have studied in. Start ANYWHERE if it means getting you on the job market. Even as an agency worker or a temporary member of staff-the more paid experience you have, the easier it'll be to find you dream job. Also, try charity shop work, or anything with communication skills. It makes you look like a genuinely nice person.
5)Stay positive. This is essential, because persistence pays off. Make sure you don't let the job search beat you, else it'll show (your desperation) in interviews. Be sure to still have a life around finding a job. Usually, jobs come about when you least expect them to.

Good luck-I'm not saying all these tips will definatley find you a job-but it'll stand you in a good position.
