Finding Motivation 19/F
I'm a sophomore in college and I'm having a really hard time with stress and motivation. I'm not lazy, I don't lay around and watch tv all day; I just focus on unimportant things and can't motivate myself to do necessary things. In high school, I developed depression very badly and I had trouble motivating myself to do things that needed to get done. I went to therapy and got a lot better and was fine for a while. But now I'm starting to have the motivation problems again. I didn't feel depressed like I was but I started going back to therapy just to talk to her about it in hopes to prevent my depression from coming back. Well, from the things I was struggling with, she concluded that I must have ADHD, and after doing some tests, she diagnosed me with it. I started taking Adderall 2 months ago and at first, it helped a lot. I would take it and get things done that I needed to. I was able to focus in school. But now when I take it, I can't bring myself to do things I NEED to do, even though I have the ability to focus and actually get it done. What do I do to MOTIVATE myself? I don't want to use my ADHD as a crutch but no matter how hard I try, my lack of motivation overpowers me. I can't just "do it" and get something over with. It is actually HARD to will myself.

Hi there!!
I admire you that you do not want ADHD to be your "crutch" and you are reallly finding ways to make yourself do what is important. Bravo!
I am not a doctor so i cant help you with the meds.
Can you recall what made you get by during the first therapy sessions, you said you got better and was fine for a while....try to recall what made you turn around then...
Maybe you need to write down things to do, put numbers (priorities) and time duration for each. You will have to check or tick off what you have done and it will give you a sense of satisfaction to see lots of checks at the end of the day!
( i even do this to remind me to drink 8 glasses of water a day!)
You can also "reward" yourself after doing those important things. SImple pleasures like a nice cold milk tea (or a hot chocolate) whatever you like when you get things done.
Another thing also is to tell someone about the things you have to do. This way you will be accountable to this person. Just tell them what you "plan" to do and report when you have done it.
THese are some things i have just thought of.
Good luck and dont be to hard on yourself too, just prioritize!! ALl the best! ]
