What does "pen dinner" mean?

While i was watching the movie "You've Got Mail," i came across this vocab. i googled it of course before writing this posting here, but i don't think i'm quite clear about it yet. Anybody who could clear this up?

You should have googled it this way 'P.E.N. dinner' which is an acronym that stands for several associations. For example, one of these acronyms stands for 'Parent Empowerment Network'(Washington State) Hope it helps a bit :)
