Have had hypothyroidism. Will it be difficult for me to conceive?

Question Posted Wednesday July 25 2012, 6:44 pm

I am a 21 years old girl from India. When I was 17, i started gaining weight suddenly. I was pretty skinny all my life otherwise. At 13, after I'd had my periods started an year back, i started getting curves, at 16, I was voluptuous. But by the time I was around 17-18, I started getting fat! I earlier used to think that it was due to all the greasy junk food I used to eat outside. But later on I noticed that I had lost a great amount of my appetite, but was still gaining weight. To add to that, I hadn't had my periods for as long as 6-7 months approx.
I got myself checked at a hospital and found out that I had hypothyroidism. Well anyway, I started taking medicines and took them for an year. My periods were normal again and I started working out to lose weight. After that when i got myself checked again, I found out that my thyroid was under control. But since the time I had stopped taking medicines, I had skipped my periods a few times as well. And I had lost only 6-7 kgs all that while, which I'd easily put on again once I stopped working out. Currently, I stand 5 feets and 4 inches tall and weigh around 64 kgs.

well, recently I had a talk with a friend who's married now. I told her about my problem in the passing. She looked at me with pity as if it was not thyroid but some sort of cancer which I might have had. Then she told me about all the things that she had witnessed women with thyroid suffering. Most of it hinted at not being able to lose weight at all and majorly not being able to conceive. I'm now deeply terrified after listening to all these incidents and have been having troubled thoughts ever-since. Do all women with thyroid suffer from complications in conception or miscarriages? Is taking birth control pills dangerous for me? I intend to get married in future and have 2 or 3 kids as well. For which I need to be fertile enough. Will being a little overweight cause me troubles like this? I'll try my level best to bring down my weight by rigorous exercising and healthy eating. It's just that I want to be able to be a mom in future real bad! Please help me out if you have any suggestions.
