am i fat?

Question Posted Saturday June 9 2012, 1:22 am

I'm 15 years old and a female. I am 5'7 and I weigh 145ish Ilbs but I didn't think I was fat. I work out often, almost every day for at least an hour and sometimes 2 hours. I play both hockey and soccer, but mostly soccer. On days i dont have soccer I'll normally run 5 miles. I don't eat the healthiest. But for breakfast I do eat a nutritious smoothie. Am I considered fat? If so, how do I lose weight?

We really can't tell you if you're fat.

You could do a BMI test online, but they are usually unreliable. You can go to a doctor, or get scales that can tell you how much of your body is fat, how much is water, and how much is muscle. This is more reliable, as you only really want to lose fat: not muscle or water. These scales are not terribly expensive. Have a look online.

But you seem to exercise a lot. Which is good. You need to keep this up, and keep challenging yourself. If you carry on doing exactly what you do right now, then your body will get used to it and there will be no change. So keep pushing yourself.

Around 80% of weight loss is down to diet. You should definitely eat well. Half of you plate should be vegetables/fruit. Very little should be fat. Throw some protein in, and a little bit of carbs. Make sure the carbs you eat are wholewheat, i.e. wholewheat bread, pasta, rice.

You also want to eat slowly, and finish when you feel full. Don't shovel it in, as then you can not tell when you are full, and you will just carry on eating. Also, do not go for seconds. If you are still hungry, stop eating and take a 5min break. Your craving for more food will usually die in this space of time. Want more food after eating in an instinct from when we were hunter-gatherers. Food was scarce, and so when we had food, it was worth eating as much as you can to keep you going until next time. Of course now, we have a glut of food, and so this is useless.

So really, a good diet and plenty of exercise is the only way to lose weight. For example:

If you eat 2500 calories, you need to burn at least 2500 calories just to stay how you are. You need to burn more than you consume if you want to lose weight.

Good luck :)

I'm not sure...! You could go online and work out your BMI and it will tell you if your'e considered fat. Im also 15... and I seriously do not do as much excersise as you! If you want to lose weight, keep excersising but maybe get a healthier diet, its a balence of the two that would work.
