At the end of the year, there is a semi-formal dance and honestly, I don't know what to do! I'm not sure what kind of dress I should wear. Also, I have some acne but I'm not really sure whether I should wear makeup or not. If anybody can provide some suggestions, that would be great! If it helps any, I'm an eighth grader, so it's not supposed to be super-fancy! Thanks in advance!

The first thing you should consider is length. Since it is a dance, you should go for something on the shorter side (floor length dresses tend to be more formal anyways) to allow you to move around more comfortably. Next is the fit. Think about your body in 3 parts. You have the chest area, the stomach area, and the leg/thigh area. For the chest area (and I'm including the shoulders and arms with this too), there are dresses that cover the arms, spaghetti strap, halter, one shoulder, strapless, etc. Since you are still pretty young, you should probably stay away from the more revealing types of dresses unless you plan on wearing a small shrug or half sweater with it (which is actually a pretty good idea to wear with most other dresses). Next is the stomach area. Some dresses have this part combined with the leg/thigh area in a sort of slinky or ruched fabric. You should probably avoid dresses like this because they are made for an older look. Instead, you should look for a dress with an empire waist which basically means that there is a defined waistline usually right under your chest and it sometimes has something that you can tie in the back (sorry, it's kind of hard to describe). These dresses tend to be more age appropriate. For the leg/thigh area, it's a good idea to go with something that is a reasonable length (around the knees) and that is loose and flowing instead of tight and clingy. One last thing for the dress is to find a color or pattern that you really like. Since it's a semi formal dance, bright colors and cute patterns are more acceptable than a boring black or white dress. Although, it will come down to what you feel comfortable in and what you prefer. Most stores where you buy your everyday clothes will probably have some dresses for you to pick out. Also, I'm including a link to an online store that has some cute dresses that might help too. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
Another tip is to pick comfortable shoes to go with your dress. If you can, stay away from high heels and tight fitting shoes. Trust me, you are not going to enjoy a cute pair of high heels after trying to walk around and dance in them for a few hours. I know a few girls that wore sparkly Toms to prom this year, so maybe you could try something like that. Also, a cute pair of sandals might work too.
As for makeup, I would recommend wearing some. If you don't normally wear makeup, then you should just go with some basic stuff. I have a little acne too, so for special occasions like these, I cover up all blemishes and imperfections with concealer and use foundation to even it out with some setting powder so it doesn't come off. If you don't feel comfortable wearing a lot of makeup, here's a neutral looking makeup tutorial I found on youtube. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
If you are willing to wear a little more bold looking makeup, then you should look on some of these channels for a look that you like. These channels have some of the best hair and makeup tutorials that I have been able to find so I hope they help :) [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
Anyways, I hope this helped. These are just some things that I have picked up and learned from over the years. If you need anymore help or have any questions, I'd be happy to help, just send me a message. [ mannequin24's advice column | Ask mannequin24 A Question ]
