well i hate to say this, but a relationship isnt much without communication. Before any relationship starts, there should at least be some type of foundation (an aquaintence, friends) before anything.
Talk about his day, the good and the bad. Thingsd his friends did, talk about him. Things he likes.
and well if you dont know what he likes..it sounds like things are only going to go downhill from there

try playing twenty questions. you just go back and forth asking each other questions. some good questions are favorite color, favorite song, favorite food, favorite band, favorite thing to do in your spare time, if you could have one superpower what would it be, where is your favorite place to be, favorite movie of all time,and favorite sport.really any question would be a good one. me and my boyfriend had a long distant relationship and we were both really shy so i know how you feel. hope this helps :)
