I dont wanna go to the GYN

Question Posted Tuesday January 17 2012, 4:03 pm

SO im 15/f and i recently asked a question about why and when you should go the gynecologist. After reading a bit more about what goes on there, I DONT WANT TO GO! I know im suppose to but im nervous and extremely scared of going. Any tips on nerves. As well is it possible to ask if i can only have females present. I would never to be able to go through with it if there were males in the room. Is it in a private room? And are my parents, well my mother, in the room?

As I said yesterday; You are covered by a law called HIPPA. This law allows you to have total privacy when meeting with any doctor. If you don't want your mom in the exam room with you she cannot by law be their. Just tell the nurse or the receptionist when you check in.

You also have the right to chose your own doctors. If you want to be seen by a female GYN that is also a right you have under the HIPPA law.

Where the law gets a little fuzzy is; can mom force you to go to a doctor? If I remember correctly what your original question was. Mom as her parental right can take you to a doctor if you have some illness that could be considered life threatening.

In your description of why she is taking you to the doctor. She may be able to drag you to the office but if you are not consenting to be examined the doctor will not touch you. JUST REMEMBER TO TELL THE DOCTOR YOUR ARE 15 AND ENVOKING YOUR RIGHTS UNDER THE HIPPA LAW. No doctor, no matter how much mom may say other wise will examine you without your consent. To do so is assault of both the doctor and your mother which the doctor will explain to mom. This is a real legal charge you can bring against both of them.

You also have the right to be seen by a doctor of your choosing. Meaning if you want a female doctor then you see a female doctor.

The exam rooms are private rooms just like in your family doctors office. The only people that should be in the room are: You, the doctor and a nurse. It is important that a nurse be in the room with you and the doctor during your exam. This is for the protection of you and the doctor.

As i said yesterday. Knowing that mom can never know what the you tell the doctor and what the doctor finds during the examination or you are treated for or prescribed. Regardless of moms reasons for dragging you to a gynecologist. I think since you have never seen one before; it is in your own reproductive healths best interest that you allow yourself to be examined.

Be truthful when answering the doctors questions. One of the questions will be are you sexually active? Answer truthfully as this is something the doctor needs to know.

READ EVERYTHING THAT HAS THE WORD PERMISSION ON IT. IF IT ALSO HAS MOMS NAME ON IT DON'T SIGN IT. THIS COULD BE THE FORM GIVING THE DOCTOR PERSISSIN TO TELL MOM WHAT YOU ARE EXAMINED FOR OR ALLOWING HER IN THE EXAM ROOM. DO NOT BE BULLIED INTO SIGNING ANYTHIN YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. ASK THE RECEPTIONIST OR NURSE TO EXPLAIN WHAT IT IS YOU ARE BEING ASKED TO SIGN. THESE ARE YOUR RIGHTS AND MOM CANNOT TAKE THEM AWAY.

Mom is not going to like this. But times have changed since she was your age and she is just going to have to learn to live with it. She is also going to make for this what she will so be prepared for whatever may come your way from her in the form of punishment for standing up for yourself. If it gets too bad talk to a trusted teacher at school. There are things they can do to help mom be better with all of these changes.

You are over the age of 14, Therefore you are able to go into doctors appointments on your own without your parents guidance.

There is a law called HIPAA, Really what it basically means is you as a patient have your own privacy rights.

Yes, They have private rooms. It's just like walking into a doctors office. They have room with a door, They have you change into a johnny etc. Everyone is nervous their first time but let me tell you, It is not as bad as it may seem. Every time I've ever gone the exam is maybe 5 minutes tops! Other than that it's mostly just your doctor asking a bunch of questions. The best part? You only have to go once a year unless of course she tells you otherwise. If you feel more comfortable you can always request a female doctor instead of a male. It's not that big of deal, Your first time is understandably nerve wracking but once you get it done it's nothing.
