Birth Control options

Question Posted Tuesday January 17 2012, 1:56 pm

I'm 20/f
And I just started having sex, but I want to be more responsible about it so I need to get on birth control.

First off: My mom CANNOT know, at all. I've heard a lot about Planned Parenthood, but I'm unsure of how things work.

1. Do they accept insurance? And if so, what kind?
2. Do they do examinations there, or do they send you to a hospital?
3. Different birth control pills? Which ones should I avoid?

Someone please explain to me how I should go about doing this. Thanks!

As a 20 year old you are old enough to make appointments yourself. You do not need your parents permission nor do you need them to attend the appointment.

There is a law called HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) meaning that you as a patient have privacy rights.

Your best bet is to probably schedule an appointment with your OBGYN, They can prescribe you birth control that is suitable for you.

There are many options:

Pill: If you aren't good at taking pills or forgetful then I wouldn't go with this option.

Mirena IUD ( Good for 5 years) I've had this one before and never had a problem.

Here is a diagram of the Mirena IUD: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

There is the Depo Provera shot: I do not recommend as it made me gain weight

There is the patch: I'm not exactly sure how that one works...

Now, Planned parenthood I don't know much about as I've always just went to my OBGYN but if you think that would be best option for you then you could look into it but I still think your best option is a Gynecologist.

As for your insurance, You can always call them and ask if they accept.
