Unhealthy Hair

Question Posted Monday January 9 2012, 10:38 pm

So I'm 17/F
I used to always straighten my hair, because my hair is naturally curly. But i stopped about a year and a half ago. My hair still has split ends, And pulling the split ends off when i get bored is a habit taht i have, that i hate and i wish i could get rid of. I want my hair to be healthy again because i wear it natural everyday now so it would look much better i just don't know what to do do get it back the way it used to be. Parts of my hair are all different lengths because of how dead it is ): so if i cut it, it will have to be way too short if im starting over that way, and it would look horrible. I do NOT look good with short hair and its only medium length right now (about 2in. past my shoulders) So what should i do to get it healthy, and quit my bad habit?

First off, I would try to trim your hair (just a little) to get rid of split ends every 6-8 weeks or more often if you use heated products. To make your hair healthier, there are tons of things to do. It basically consists of a healthy diet that includes a lot of vitamin a and vitamin b. Also, you could try eating more protein. Try to find good shampoos and conditioners and make sure you use them properly (like not conditioning everyday, massaging shampoo into your scalp, trying to avoid getting conditioner in your roots especially if your hair is oily). Some natural things that I've tried as well are deep conditioning with mayonnaise and/or olive oil every week or 2 weeks. I've heard many different times to keep in for. Some people say 10 minutes, others have said that they leave it in for a whole day. It just depends on your personal preference. The point of it is to make your hair stronger and shiner. I've also heard something about biotin or something like that. You would have to look it up on google. Anyways, there's tons of things you can do. If you want to know more, just google it and I promise you'll find many different things and products and stuff. I hope this helped :)

To slow down split ends from forming, you need to find a shampoo and conditioner that works for you. Every one is different in this matter, so I cannot suggest any that would be of any use, because it may or may not help. But I would suggest to try out several different shampoos/conditioners until you find some that works for your hair. As for stopping split ends, it's impossible, it's going to happen regardless of whether you care for your hair excessively or barely. You are suppose to at least get a hair trim once every 3 months, as this helps your hair grow better and stronger. If you don't your hair will only get worse and worse in the long run. Trust me, I found out the hard way. I went years without cutting my hair (I had it to my knees!) and when I went to a stylist, they told me because of the lack of trimming, my hair was so damaged, I had no choice but to lose most of it. It is a very sad thing (especially if you love your hair) but in the end, my hair was never more healthier and stronger. I go in regularly for trimmings, and I found shampoos/conditioners that aid in its strength and health. Typically though, you do NOT want to use the cheaper brands (IE; V05, Suave, etc.) Because they do what they are suppose to do, but do not help in prevention of damage that well. If you want better hair, it's going to cost, but if you love your hair, it's worth it.
