Okay, I have a HUGE spider phobia and I'm way to scared to look this up in case there's a picture of this thing, but I was in my bathroom when I saw these spiders. I'll admit, they wwere kinda small maybe about the size of a pea with thin legs and they were orange and black, a bit striped.
Please tell me this isn't poisonous. (And don't lecture me on why I shouldn't be scared of spiders, I can't help it!)
orphans answered Friday August 5 2011, 9:40 am: I have googled it for you, i just searched "small black red spider stripes". I found some info on a spider called the Redback Spider. But this type usually lives in Australia. The fact of the matter it, most spiders are not poisonous, and most poisonous spiders usually reside in Australia. But without any information on where you live, its hard to be exact. But here's some info on the Redback- It sounds similar to what you describe, and is very poisonous:
The female Redback has a round body about the size of a large pea (1 centimetre long), with long, slender legs. The body is a deep black colour (occasionally brownish), often containing an obvious orange to red longitudinal stripe on the upper abdomen. The stripe is sometimes broken or looks like small red dots. On the underside of the abdomen there is an "hourglass" shaped red/orange spot. Juvenile spiders have additional white markings on the abdomen. The male Redback is three to four millimetres long and is light brown in colour with white markings on the upper side of the abdomen and a pale hour-glass marking on the underside.
The Redback spider (Latrodectus hasselti) is a potentially dangerous spider endemic to Australia. It is a member of the genus Latrodectus or the widow family of spiders, which are found throughout the world. The female is easily recognisable by her black body with a prominent red stripe on the upper side (i.e. the back) of her abdomen. Females have a body length of about a centimetre while the male is smaller, being only 3 to 4 millimetres long. The Redback spider is one of few arachnids which display sexual cannibalism while mating.
Redbacks are considered one of the most dangerous spiders in Australia.[1] The Redback spider has a neurotoxic venom which is toxic to humans with bites causing severe pain. There is an antivenom for Redback bites which is commercially available.
That info is from Wikipedia: So it may not be completely true. I will post a link at the end of the answer to the article which i obtained the above information. But don't worry about being afraid of spiders. Granted some are big, scary, and poisonous, but most are not. But its a totally normal fear: I don't think anyone would lecture you on why you shouldnt be scared).
If you think that what you see is a Redback, i would advise you to call an exterminator.
