Singing voice sounds horrible when it's recorded

Question Posted Friday July 1 2011, 7:22 pm

we were doing this class concert thing and decided to sing for the fun of it, i told people before that i can't really sing but after my friends were like wow you're great and some other girls in my class said so too so i decided to record my voice on my phone and when i played it back i sounded so gross like a little 5 year old my voice was all high and stuff. My teachers from my old school said i was a good singer too but i think maybe they were just being nice to me even though i told them i don't really care if they say i sing bad, i was wondering if it was the recordeed or i just can't sing and people are being nice?

Yeah, it's hard to know when people are either pulling your leg or just being nice. I have seen a lot of crap singers or players on You Tube and comments saying, "oh, you're so great." Most of those comments are from friends and family. So I understand your anxiety, especially as I am definitely the worst singer in the world (pretty fair guitar player, though), which means you are at least better than me.

Also, remember that phones have a very constricted dynamic range, which makes everything sound kinda tinny. And, as an earlier commenter noted, everyone hates their voice when it's recorded anyway. So you have a confluence of things there that may be convincing you wrongly that you are a bad singer.

The only other way to find out if you REALLY are good or bad would either be to put something up on You Tube (where the criticism can be rather harsh at times) or go see a vocal instructor. That's about it, unfortunately.

... and you will feel MUCH better about things.

Everyone hates their own voice when played back. Everyone.

Full explanation about what to do about it, please read the answers on the question I linked you to. You will be surprised how easy it is to get comfortable with your voice once you know the real deal. :-)

Happy singing!

Try recording your voice just talking and listen to it for some reason we always think our voices sound weird being recorded... I dont like my voice to be recorded on things like cell phones... they have things specially made to record yourself sisng try them out I am sure it was just the recording device you used :)
