My computer freakishly slows down. What's going on?

Question Posted Friday March 11 2011, 3:39 pm

This has happened sporadically for a couple of months now, but today it happened about five times in a half hour, so I'm beginning to get worried.

What happens is, my computer appears to freeze, but waht I actually think is happening (or at least seems to be happening) is that it begins working EXTREMELY SLOWLY for a couple of seconds at a time. For example, if I am watching a movie or a video on hulu, the screen will freeze, but the speakers will emit a sound similar to a cd skipping very rapidly. And in that skipping, you can make out the words that are being said; and they are said extremely slowly in this time period. For example, when I was on Hulu today, the slate visa card commercial came up and my computer "froze" - And I could hear "V-i-i-i-i-i--i-i-i-ii-i-i-i-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s--ss-s-aa-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a s-s-s-s-a-a-a-a-a-v-v-v-v-v-e-s-s-s-s-s-s y-y-y-y-yy-o-o-oo-u-u-u-u m-m-m-m-m-o-o-on-n-n-n-nn-e-e-e-e-ey-y-y-yy" ("Visa saves you money").

This has never happened to me on any other computer; what's going on?

If it helps, I'm running Windows 7 on a 64-bit HP laptop that I got about 2 winters ago.

Could be a few things

Virus

Too many programs running at once

You didn't give any description of your computer, If your computer is ridiculously slow you can try to defrag it and delete all unnecessary files.

Start-Programs-Accessories-System Defragment

I don't know what else to tell you as I cannot see your computer. Another possibility is make sure your computer has a video card!
