I feel like i should have figured out who I am already... I am 18!

Question Posted Sunday February 27 2011, 12:26 am

is it normal to feel like you have no clue who you are?

i'm a teenage 18 year old girl still in high school but have 3 months left until i'm on my own.

i thought high school was supposed to be the time when you experience who you really are.. well if thats the case, then that was a waste for me. i still have no clue who i am or what my interests are. my high school is very clique-y. theres the popular crowd, geeky crowd, jocks, band geeks, etc. I honestly don't fit into any of those groups.

I dont even have a group of friends. I have 2 best friends. my girl best friend, and my boyfriend. i spend every minute with them in school. of course i talk to others, but not like i do with my best friends.

another thing, most people say you experience a lot of things in high school and thats how you know who you are.. well i am super super busy with a sport, and my family. i dont really have time to do what i want. i'm interested in art, but dont have time to really focus on it. thats probably why i suck at art. but i love it. I like the drums (music) but i have no time for lessons, which is why i cant play. I love to read books, but have no time to read them.

its almost like i'm wasting my time doing useless things like sports when i could be out there figuring out who i am.

i'm going to college in a few months, i feel like i should have figured out who i am already by now. I dont want to go to college not knowing who i am or what i'm interested in.

gahH! i am just so confused and frustrated. there are so many things i want to do and experience but either dont have time or money or whatever.

who am i? someone please help. thank you

Hi, I'm someone who is old enough to be your grandparent. I'm hoping I can offer you some advice you will find useful.

First let me assure you that you are among the normal teenagers in the world today. It is unfortunate that High School today does not truly prepare students for what awaits them when they graduate. Today it is all the school system can do to teach you what is required to pass the tests required for graduation. This is the result of budget problems and laws such as no child left behind.

All is not lost. You do have some time to as some would say, find yourself". Regardless of what major you may pick many of the majors you can chose from have the same prerequisite for basic studies, especially in the first year. For your first semester or even your first year you can select a Liberal Arts major. Most if not all of the credits from this major will transfer to any other major you might select after your first year of College.

You also have an alternative to going off to college this fall. You can elect to stay home and take your Liberal Arts, AA degree at the local community college, which will save your parents money. While doing so you can work with the guidance counselors at the community college to find out just what you might be best suited for; what is most attractive to you. There are a variety of things the community college has available to them to help you, including testing, that you can take advantage of.

I would suggest that rather than go off to College and be lost or unhappy that you seriously consider your local community college. You can investigate this option now by visiting them after school or arranging a visit through your high school guidance counselor.

i had the same thing happening to me, and i didnt knew what i truly wanted until i turend 20 and was already in university, i graduated high school at 17 ! 17 is so young to decide what i want to achieve in life ! ...so i chose to study medicine...then decided computer system engineering ....THEN i decided no wait i wanna be an industrial engineer, so i changed my major 5 days before starting uni, i chose it because it was the "less horrible" one all of them had stuff i didnt liked or thought i wasnt gonna be good at , so i started uni...and first semester i was so ovewhelmed too much stuff to learn and so difficult for me at the moment, i felt lost, felt i didn't choose right ! ...so i went and changed to marketing !! and suddenly i was like wait NO i wanna go back to engineering! ...eventho i didnt knew back then what my major was all about, i had an idea...and to be honest i didnt fully understood UNTIL i got a job as an industrial engineering, it was an internship, and THEN i knew what it was really about , i now can say i like it and enjoy it ...
my point is....17, 18 is TOO young to know what you want to get out of life,, eventho i feel happy i stayed at engineering..i must admit that i first chose it because i was young and i had in my mind the idea of "i wanna have a super cool job where i make a lot of money " ......NOW i'm 22, im almost graduating and to be honest i wish i wouldve listened to my parents !...its confusing to know what you wanna do at such a young age! and our perspective change so drasticlly ! now that i see it with my aunts and uncles that they have jobs where they are payed extremly well...but at what price? to work super long hours a day and never get to see their children and spend time with them...they work frmo 7 am to 7pm...they're kids have to stay until 7pm at school or with someone else to take care of them and when they go pick them up they are usually asleep already! ...MY point is.... now that i know that not everything about life is money or becoming rich or getting a super job to prove everyone else that you can do it..i wish i had chosen a major that would allow me to have a job i enjoy but also do other things i wanna do like raise a family, without being a stayed home mom... i can't change it now cause im so close to graduating but i will persue my other interest which was industrial desing that i must say i didnt chose to study cause i thought creativity was 100% needed or drawing skills when to be honest they arent. i even considered persuing a career in piano! i play piano since im 7 years old...

i know i might have mixed thngs up now with that story but my point is to tell you that you're not the only one who feels this way, is very normal, i think 17 , 18 and when you leave high school is so young to decide what you wanna do in life but trust me when the time comes you will know, i used to be very skeptical like yea right when the time comes...but the truth is ive learned its true :).....i have friends who didn't knew what they wanted to do unitl they were 24! you dont have to know it all at once already and to be honest trust i know how you feel like high school should be where you have the time of your life etc etc...but i think that thats not true at all...i think ive learned alooooooot since i started uni and i changed alot !!! high school was just a stage where i would sometimes hang with the rich cool people, and suddenly id change to hang with the more alternative style ones , then i finally found a group of friends i feel totally comfortable with, you dont have to stick to one thing, more like a combination of it , people who you identify yourself with and that bring something good to you, don't feel like high school should be this amazing experience, i think you will start seeing things alot differently when you start college, i think there is where you really learn who you are, what a better opportunity to do it than when you're on your own ! without people like parents or other friends putting pressure on you doing stuff, enjoy right now the time you have left to do this kind of stuff you enjoy and not necesarilly plan on making a living of it,
dont try to live it all at once, itll come, and trust me time goes by so fast ! so enjoy right now that you're young and have that extra time no pressure or real responsabilities yet, the best things are about to come, trust me i didn't believe it either.
college is in my opinion, the time where you find out who you really are and what you wanna do. good luck!
