Stephen King The Dark Tower

Spoilers!!!!!
I just read the end of The Gunslinger and The kinda catch up bit written at the start of The Drawing of the three. I was kinda confused however. I thought that Walter O Dim "THE MAN IN BLACK" was Marten.
So my question is, was the THE MAN IN BLACK Marten?
I assumed he was when the MIB said when Marten left, he didn't really leave he just changed and Roland goes " marten never left" " I oughta kill you now"

I would like a simple yes or no answer so please don't give any spoilers away. Thank you very much
